Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, and Nickelodeon are ACC’s 2008 Golden Beacon Award® Nominees

Washington, DC ––The Association of Cable Communicators (ACC) announced today the nominees for the association's highest honor, the Golden Beacon Award.  Nominees are:

  • "Animal Planet Expo 2007," Animal Planet
  • "Nickelodeon's Let's Just Play," Nickelodeon
  • "Planet Earth," Discovery Channel

"These three communications and public affairs initiatives exemplify the cable industry's commitment, day-in and day-out, to societal concerns across the country at a global, national and local level," said Ellen Kroner, 2008 Beacon Awards co-chair and senior vice president, corporate communications and marketing, Rainbow Media Holdings, LLC.

Amy Cohn, 2008 Beacon Awards co-chair and executive director, public affairs, Cox Communications, added, "Among its many community efforts, cable is encouraging pet rescue and adoptions, improving the overall health and wellness of kids by empowering them to make healthier lifestyle choices, and expanding the world's knowledge of natural history."

ACC's Golden Beacon Award recognizes a communications and public affairs initiative that has made an impact within the cable industry, while enhancing cable's image nationwide.  The 2007 Golden Beacon Award recognized Cox Communications for its communications and public affairs initiative "Take Charge! Takes on Internet Safety."

ACC members who judged the Beacon Awards nominated Animal Planet for its "Animal Planet Expo 2007" campaign. Celebrating its 10th consecutive year creating lasting memories for families nationwide, Animal Planet Expo 2007 brought distribution partners and communities together to share a common passion: animals.  As the longest-running consumer-focused tour in the cable television industry, Animal Planet Expo has successfully offered local affiliates a host of unique marketing opportunities -- from bottom-line incentives to top-of-mind consumer awareness -- all in one fun-filled package.  Since its launch in 1998, nearly 1.5 million animal lovers of all ages have experienced the thrill of exotic animal presentations, Frisbee dog shows, on-site pet adoption and more. 

Nickelodeon is a nominee for its program "Nickelodeon's Let's Just Play."  The campaign is built on three key components.  Let's Just Play Go Healthy Challenge consists of on-air, online and community-based events to generate a movement among kids to be healthy.  Information and resources are available via all media platforms, which includes on-air, Nick magazine, Nick.com, TurboNick, iTunes, online gaming and VOD.  During Worldwide Day of Play, Nickelodeon, Noggin, NickToons, Nick GAS, and Nick.com go completely dark, taking programming off the air for three full hours to deliver one simple message: turn off the television, get up, get out and go play.  Finally, Let's Just Play Giveaway gives kids ages 6 to 15 a chance to bring much-needed dollars and resources for fitness, recreation and nutrition programs to their schools and communities.

Discovery Channel's Emmy award-winning series Planet Earth goes to the core of the company's mission to provide the world's highest quality programming. The goal of Planet Earth was to present our world as it has never been seen before, to create an epic HD series and to ensure that millions tuned in. Redefining natural history, the series is one of the most ambitious projects Discovery has undertaken, requiring every part of the company to make it a reality - including on air, Discovery HD Theater, VOD, partnerships with groups ranging from national sponsors to The Nature Conservancy, and creative publicity, marketing, and retail campaigns and promotions. Ultimately, Planet Earth became the most watched cable event of the century. It broke new ground in filmmaking techniques, went where no cameras have gone before, and revealed startling new animals and animal behavior. It is truly natural history for the 21st century.

ACC will honor the Golden Beacon Award nominees and announce the winner during the Beacon Awards Gala, set for Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at The Rennaissance Mayflower Hotel, Washington, D.C.  The Beacon Awards Gala is one of the highlights of ACC's FORUM 2008:  "ACCess the Power:  Connect.  Communicate.  Transform."  FORUM is the cable industry's annual educational event dedicated to the issues facing communications and public affairs professionals.
