2007 Golden Beacon and Beacon Award® Winners

Washington, DC – During a gala ceremony the evening of March 13, the Association of Cable Communicators (ACC), formerly the Cable Television Public Affairs Association (CTPAA), announced the winners of the 2007 Golden Beacon and Beacon Awards®, cable’s highest award for communications and public affairs excellence. ACC awarded the Golden Beacon, the association’s highest honor, to Cox Communications’ Take Charge! Takes on Internet Safety. ACC also presented 83 Beacon Awards, representing work by MSOs, cable systems, programming networks, cable associations and technology providers in categories such as community relations, competitive response and public service announcements. A list of the 2007 Beacon Awards can be found at the end of this release. The Beacon Awards Ceremony was one of many highlights of ACC’s annual conference, FORUM 2007: Cable to the Extreme: Communicating the Possibilities , held March 11 - 14 at the Ritz-Carlton, Washington, DC. Ben Bailey, Discovery Channel’s Host and Driver of Cash Cab, was the master of ceremonies for the evening.

ACC presented the 2007 Golden Beacon, awarded to a public affairs initiative that has made an impact within the cable industry and enhanced cable’s image nationwide, to Cox Communications’ Take Charge! Takes on Internet Safety. In 2006 Cox Communications launched a comprehensive “cyber smarts” campaign, enhancing its successful “Take Charge” program that encourages safe use of mass media among families in Cox communities. The company focused on strategic national partnerships, compelling research, national events such as a Teen Summit on Internet Safety, and Capitol Hill outreach to highlight the dangers facing kids on the Internet, as well as steps parents and children can take to be “cyber smarter.” Results over the past year have been well above expectations and have included major national media hits, greatly increased traffic to the program Web site and successful meetings with key lawmakers.

In addition to the Beacon Awards and Golden Beacon Award, two other highly coveted awards were presented during the ceremony. Time Warner Cable – Nebraska Division was the recipient of the ESPN Good Sports Award for its High School Football on Demand. The award is given annually to a project that generates outstanding community involvement through education and athletics. In rural Nebraska, where high school football games are often the pinnacle of the week, Time Warner selected key match-ups throughout its service area, and rolled into town each Friday night to cover the games for its newly launched Nebraska on Demand channel. The initiative generated unparalleled excitement and publicity for small-town athletes, marching bands, and student videographers alike, and views of the Nebraska on Demand channel increased more than 75% by the end of the season. The winner of the Joel A. Berger Award is Cable Positive for its Join the Fight: Weapons of Mass Instruction campaign. Named after the former publisher of Cablevision magazine, the award annually recognizes an outstanding public affairs initiative that creates AIDS awareness in local communities. In Cable Positive’s initiative, celebrity activists were shot in black and white and discuss the weapons they use in the fight against HIV and AIDS: their “minds”, “hearts” and “voices”. The campaign ran on cable systems and networks across the country from World AIDS Day 2005 through World AIDS Day 2006. During the campaign, Cable Positive’s Web site, www.cablepositive.org, recorded more than three million hits as a direct result of the public service spots—making it the most successful interactive public service campaign in Cable Positive’s history.

In 2004, ACC created the Community Bridges Award to recognize outstanding, non-cable industry partner organizations and individuals that take part in cable public affairs initiatives and are often instrumental to the success of those initiatives. The 2007 winner is the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA). As the largest, volunteer, child advocacy association in the nation, the PTA reminds our country of its obligations to children and provides parents and families with a powerful voice to speak on behalf of every child while providing the best tools for parents to help their children be successful students. The cable industry proudly does its part to spread the PTA’s message by airing its public service announcements and co-hosting media literacy workshops across the country.

Each year, ACC’s President selects, and the ACC Board approves, the President’s Award recipients, honoring individuals for the development and implementation of public affairs initiatives within their own companies and throughout the cable industry. The 2007 recipients were David L. Cohen, executive vice president, Comcast Corporation, and Abbe Raven, president and CEO, A&E Television Networks.

ACC received 494 Beacon entries this year, an 8% increase from the 2006 awards and evidence of the strong and continuing commitment by the cable industry to communications and public affairs. Finalists and winners were selected after an extensive two-phase judging process in Washington, D.C., at the NCTA headquarters in January.

The Association of Cable Communicators (ACC) is the only national, professional organization specifically addressing the issues, needs and interests of the cable industry’s communications and public affairs professionals. Formally known as the Cable Television Public Affairs Association (CTPAA), its mission is to develop and promote cable communications excellence through professional development to help achieve industry and corporate goals. ACC works to enhance each member’s status and influence through skill building and professional development. For more information on ACC, go to www.cablecommunicators.com or www.ctpaa.org.
