CTPAA Announces Second Annual Public Affairs Institute

Graduate Level Course Developed in Partnership with The George Washington University

Washington, DC - Continuing its commitment to advance the skills and effectiveness of individuals working in cable public affairs, the Cable Television Public Affairs Association today announced the second annual CTPAA Public Affairs Institute will take place November 14-16, 2005, at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. This three-day graduate level program will educate members on strategic management, communication, and public policy issues facing the cable industry.

The Institute, designed in close consultation with The George Washington University's Graduate School of Political Management (GSPM), draws from its world-renowned curriculum. It is specifically targeted at mid to senior level public affairs executives who are willing to challenge themselves to develop the enhanced skill sets necessary to meet the challenge of today's competitive marketplace.

"The inaugural Institute held last year was extremely successful, and participants gained advanced skills that are directly applicable to their daily responsibilities. Once again we are very pleased to partner with The George Washington University and provide this educational opportunity to our members," said CTPAA Executive Director, Steve Jones.

The CTPAA Public Affairs Institute will educate participants from across the country by focusing on five core areas: strategic issue management, community relations and grassroots politics, strategic crisis management, effective lobbying principles at all government levels, and maximizing the impact of political contributions. CTPAA will immediately begin reviewing applications for the November program and has already received inquiries from a number of members.

"This program has been specifically designed for cable professionals to give them a practical understanding of the strategic communications necessary to survive in their industry's competitive marketplace. They will be taught by some of the best practitioners in the field," said Dr. Steven Billet, chief of staff, GSPM.

Each day will explore one or more different management issues through the use of case studies. Integrated with each case will be workshops and group activities that will reflect the GSPM's emphasis on practical policies, instead of theoretical approaches, by providing concrete examples and stimulating discussion. Participants in the Institute will leave with enhanced practical skills completely transferable to their daily work.

The CTPAA Public Affairs Institute is just one of the programs CTPAA offers its more than 600 members. Twenty-three members participated in the inaugural Institute held in December 2004, with participants coming from local cable systems, programming networks, multiple system operators and industry associations.

Other association programs include FORUM, a three-day national educational conference; the Beacon awards, recognizing excellence in public affairs throughout the cable industry; CPR Facts, a bi-weekly newsletter highlighting public affairs news and events; an annual membership directory and resource guide; and electronic resources housed on the CTPAA Web site. Additionally CTPAA offers its members many other resources and networking opportunities to advance their careers.
