Association of Cable Communicators Announces 2009 Golden Beacon and Beacon Award Winners

Denver, Colorado––During a gala ceremony the evening of October 26, the Association of Cable Communicators (ACC) announced the winners of the 2009 Golden Beacon and Beacon Awards, honoring excellence in cable communications and public affairs, and celebrated the awards 20th Anniversary.  ACC awarded the Golden Beacon, the association's highest honor, to Nickelodeon's The Big Green Help.  ACC also presented 59 Beacon Awards representing work by MSOs, cable systems, programming networks, cable associations and technology providers in categories such as community relations, programming publicity and public service announcements.  A list of the 2009 Beacon Awards can be found at the end of this release.  The Beacon Awards Ceremony kicks off ACC's annual conference FORUM 2009: Communicating Cable 3.0: People, Products & Value held Oct. 26 - 28 in Denver.  Doug Williams, host of the Starz original series "Martin Lawrence Presents 1st Amendment Stand-up," was the master of ceremonies.

"For more than 20 years, the cable industry has been a leader in corporate social responsibility and worked to improve the communities it serves," said Janice Caluda, 2009 Beacon Awards chair and vice president, operations, Florida Cable Telecommunications Association.  "The Beacon Awards celebrates that proud tradition and recognizes the best of those efforts.   I for one look forward to seeing how that practice will continue in the next 20 years."

ACC presented the 2009 Golden Beacon, awarded to a communications or public affairs initiative that has made an impact within the cable industry and enhanced cable's image nationwide, to Nickelodeon's The Big Green Help.  On Earth Day 2008, Nickelodeon initiated a new era of pro-social leadership with the launch of a new, multi-year, global initiative: The Big Green Help.  The Big Green Help is a kid-led, environmental campaign that provides information and tools to help explain climate change to kids through on-air messaging, grassroots activity, and online gaming.  Millions of kids around the world have joined The Big Green Help and committed themselves to take action on behalf of the environment.  In its first year, the campaign included: the first-ever green global multiplayer online game which resulted in more than 27 million game plays; star power like Miranda Cosgrove, KeKe Palmer, LeBron James and Cameron Diaz; the first ever Big Green Help Award at the 2009 Kids' Choice Awards; local and national partnerships with top environmental and community organizations; and Nickelodeon's Earth Day "Power Down" where participants turned off their lights as a signal of environmental consciousness.

In addition to the Beacon Awards and Golden Beacon Award, two other highly coveted awards were presented during the ceremony.  Cox Communications in Florida received the ESPN Good Sports Award, given annually to a project that generates outstanding community involvement through education and athletics, for its initiative "The Negro League Baseball Project."  MTV received the Joel A. Berger Award for its initiative "GYT: Get Yourself Tested."  Named after former publisher of Cablevision Magazine Joel Berger, this award is presented to a cable industry public affairs campaign that achieves exceptional results in the area of AIDS awareness.

The association created the ACC Community Bridges Award, sponsored by WE tv's WE Volunteer initiative, in 2004 to recognize outstanding partners outside of the cable industry, and this year ACC honored the Afterschool Alliance.  The cable industry is committed to improving the communities in which it serves, and partner organizations or individuals are often instrumental to the success of cable's efforts.  The cable industry and Afterschool Alliance International have partnered all across the country to help make afterschool programs a greater priority in our nation and ensure that more children are safe and engaged in the afterschool hours.

Each year, The President's Award recognizes leaders who, by their guidance and support, advance the role of communications and public affairs in the cable industry. The award, selected annually by the ACC president and ratified by the ACC board, honors individuals who have developed and implemented communications and public affairs initiatives within their companies as well as throughout the cable industry.  The 2009 recipients were George Bodenheimer, Co-Chairman, Disney Media Networks, President of ESPN Inc. and ABC Sports, and Tom Might, President and CEO of Cable ONE.

ACC members chose the 2009 Beacon Award winners during an extensive, two-phase judging process.  The overwhelming number of high-quality Beacon Award entries submitted this year continue to demonstrate the cable industry's commitment to communications and public affairs and represent company initiatives implemented over the past year in areas such as community relations, education, multicultural public relations and public service announcements.
