Killing Kennedy Wins Golden Beacon®, 43 Honored with Beacons®

During a dinner ceremony in Atlanta, the Association of Cable Communicators (ACC) announced the winners of the 2014 Golden Beacon® and Beacon Awards®, honoring excellence in cable communications and public affairs. ACC awarded the Golden Beacon, the association’s highest honor, to Killing Kennedy, National Geographic Channel. ACC also presented 43 Beacon Awards representing work by MSOs, cable systems, programming networks, and cable associations in categories such as community relations, public service announcements and social media communications. The Beacon Awards Ceremony rounded out Wednesday events during ACC’s annual conference FORUM 2014: Power of Storytelling: Hashtags, Headlines and Soundbites, held June 3-5 in Atlanta.

“Across the United States cable communicators promote their company’s products, contribute to the bottom line and improve the quality of life in the communities their companies serve,” said Pete Abel, 2014 Beacon Awards chair and senior vice president, corporate communications, Suddenlink. “The Beacon Awards celebrate the very significant role cable communicators play in our industry’s success and recognize the best of those efforts.”

ACC presented the 2014 Golden Beacon, awarded to a communications or public affairs initiative that has made an impact within the cable industry and enhanced cable’s image nationwide, to Killing Kennedy, National Geographic Channel.

November 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination and the television landscape was flooded with related programming. National Geographic Channel’s objective was to stand out in this crowded landscape and position Killing Kennedy as the must-see on the topic. National Geographic Channel created a comprehensive integrated communications and media relations strategy to garner coverage for Killing Kennedy (premiered Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013) based on the best-selling book by Bill O’Reilly. A 360-degree, multiplatform campaign was executed to position the project as the highest profile by (a) strategically revealing production details and assets, (b) utilizing the celebrity cast, and (c) positioning it as a can’t-miss “event.” This strategy built excitement through a steady drumbeat of announcements and events, to drive viewers to the special.

ACC members chose the 2014 Beacon Award winners during an extensive two-round judging process. The high-quality Beacon entries submitted this year continue to demonstrate the cable industry's commitment to communications and public affairs and represent company initiatives implemented over the past year in areas such as events and observances, integrated communications and Web sites.

Inadvertently, one entry listed as a Finalist, was not announced as a Beacon Award winner. The entry, in the Education category - MSO Headquarters, from Time Warner Cable, New York, NY, STEM in Sports, should have been announced as the Beacon Award winner in this category.

Time Warner Cable Hits Milestone by Connecting One Million

The White House in late May announced Time Warner Cable, through its Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) initiative, reached its goal of connecting one million young people to hands-on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning opportunities and resources.

Pledges to connect a million minds to STEM were collected through the CAMM website, where parents, educators, and mentors also recorded stories of how they introduced students to STEM activities. The milestone comes less than five years after President Obama and Time Warner Cable announced this commitment in response to the White House’s “Educate to Innovate” campaign, designed to move American students from the middle to the top of the pack in science and math achievement over the next decade. The announcement was made at The White House Science Fair, which was attended by Time Warner Cable chairman and CEO Rob Marcus.

Although the future job market relies heavily on STEM capabilities, young Americans have historically shown alarmingly low levels of interest in these subjects. In 2009, in response to the President’s call to action, Time Warner Cable launched Connect a Million Minds to have parents, mentors and others commit to connecting over one million students to highly-engaging after-school STEM activities.

Connect A Million Minds was created to help bridge the “inspiration gap” - the gap between how American students currently think about STEM and how they will need to approach STEM in order to become the problem solvers of tomorrow who fill the STEM workforce pipeline.

Through national and local non-profit partnerships, employee volunteers, original public service announcements and innovative campaigns Time Warner Cable organized direct and in-kind investments of more than $100 million to inspire student interest in STEM subjects. Together with partners and nonprofit organizations around the country, like FIRST Robotics and the Coalition for Science After School, CAMM connects students to high-quality STEM learning experiences.

Building on the milestone announced by The White House, Time Warner Cable said it will continue to connect students through new and expanded partnerships that bring high-quality STEM learning to existing afterschool programs, particularly those that focus on reaching young girls, African Americans, Hispanics and other underrepresented populations. Time Warner Cable has approximately 80 CAMM events planned for the coming months and will continue to leverage its media assets, which include "It Ain't Rocket Science"- an original television series that introduces families to STEM events and careers.   History Rolls Out Mission to Honor Initiative

Prior to the Memorial Day holiday weekend, History launched, Mission to Honor, a digital initiative and webpage gallery that viewers used to pay tribute to members of the military to celebrate Memorial Day and the 70th Anniversary of D-Day.

Individuals interested in taking part in the program were asked to share an image and their story of a loved one who has served or is currently serving in the military. Submissions could also be made by Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #MissionToHonor. The network used submissions selected from the gallery to create features that ran on History on June 6. For additional information contact Kirsten Young at or 212-210-9001.

Cox Foundation Gives $5 Million Grant for Trail Development

The James M. Cox Foundation announced a $5 million grant to develop the Atlanta BeltLine's Westside Trail. The Atlanta BeltLine is one of the nation's largest urban redevelopment programs that will provide a network of public parks, multi-use trails and transit along a 22-mile railroad corridor that encircles the City of Atlanta. Upon completion, the BeltLine will connect 45 neighborhoods.

The Westside Trail, a three-mile path in the BeltLine's southwest corridor, will connect four schools and four parks.  Hundreds of native trees will line the trail, which will create 40 acres of new greenspace to be used by area residents and visitors. A Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will cover 42 percent of the project cost. The $5 million grant from the Cox Foundation will go toward a campaign currently underway to raise the additional funds needed to complete the project. For additional information contact Mallard Holliday at or 404-843-5981.

Discovery Education and Alcoa Foundation Launch Career Initiative

The Alcoa Foundation and Discovery Education announced in late May the launch of “Manufacture Your Future,” a new online destination designed to inspire students in grades 6-12 to take the first step towards exploring and pursuing today’s manufacturing careers.

The program provides middle and high school educators, guidance counselors, students and families with hands-on resources that build interest around post-secondary manufacturing career opportunities. Manufacture Your Future encourages the development of critical thinking skills through real-world application, and offers dynamic standards-based, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) focused lesson plans, a manufacturing career guide, family discussion starters and a virtual field trip designed to give students an inside look at some of today’s exciting manufacturing careers.

Manufacture Your Future will launch its first virtual field trip on National Manufacturing Day, October 3, 2014. Students who join the virtual tour will get an inside look at careers in advanced manufacturing through an interactive event hosted live from an Alcoa facility.   Comcast Announces $2 Million in College Scholarships

The Comcast Foundation announced last week that it has awarded approximately $2 million in college scholarships through the Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program to nearly 2,000 high school seniors across the U.S. for the 2014-2015 school year. Annually Comcast works with principals and guidance counselors to recognize the best and the brightest high school seniors for their community service, academic performance and leadership skills.

This year, 52 percent of the student recipients come from diverse backgrounds, including 18 percent African American, 14 percent Hispanic, 12 percent Asian and 4.5 percent multiracial.  Since the inception of the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Program in 2000, more than $21.6 million in scholarships has been awarded to approximately 21,000 deserving students to use toward their pursuit of a higher education.

"These scholarship winners have demonstrated exemplary leadership skills in both the classroom and in their communities and have served as models for their fellow students," said Charisse R. Lillie, vice president of community investment for Comcast Corporation and president of the Comcast Foundation. "We are proud to help support them as they continue on their educational journey."

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers philosophy is to give young people every opportunity to be prepared for the future, to engage youth in their communities so they develop a sense of citizenship and to demonstrate the value placed on civic involvement by the business community.   For additional information contact Charisse R. Lillie at or 215-286-7370.

  ESPN Wins Three Murrow Awards

The 2014 National Edward R. Murrow Awards honoring excellence in electronic journalism were announced this week by the Radio Television Digital News Association.  ESPN’s Outside the Lines was honored for two features while E:60 won for a segment that aired on ESPN Radio.

Outside the Lines’ “Carry On” won in the Network Television News Documentary category, while Outside the Lines’ “The Lady Jags: Losing to Win,” (Network Television) and E:60’s “Enemy Within” (Network Radio) were recognized in the Reporting: Sports group.

“Carry On” producer Jose Morales and reporter Tom Rinaldi updated the 2009 tale of two Cleveland high school wrestlers, one blind and one a double leg amputee, who found strength and friendship through their challenges. “Lady Jags” chronicled the Carroll Academy girls’ basketball team in Huntingdon, Tenn., which had lost 213 straight high school basketball games but uses sports as a way to win in life. ”The Enemy Within” was Jeremy Schaap’s examination of the epidemic of soldier-on-soldier sexual abuse within the U.S. military, which aired on ESPN Radio’s The Sporting Life with Jeremy Schaap.
