Human Rights Campaign Honors Cable Industry Companies
The Human Rights Campaign recently released the 12th annual Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index listing the “Best Places to Work” for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. Six cable industry companies received a perfect score of 100 percent from the Index; Cisco Systems, Comcast Corporation, Time Warner Cable, Time Warner, Viacom, and The Walt Disney Company.
“We are humbled that the Human Rights Campaign continues to recognize Time Warner Cable as a place where LGBT people can start, grow and enjoy their careers,” said Peter Stern, executive vice president and chief strategy, people and corporate development officer at Time Warner Cable. “We’re proud to be the service provider of choice for our LGBT customers across the country.”
The Corporate Equality Index evaluates corporations on their LGBT-related policies and practices in areas including non-discrimination workplace protections, domestic partner benefits, transgender-inclusive health care benefits, competency programs, and public engagement with the LGBT community.
Through the Index, the Human Rights Campaign examines the policies and practices that impact LGBT employees across hundreds of large U.S. corporations. The Human Rights Campaign has more than a million members and is the nation’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for LGBT Americans. A complete list of the 2014 Corporate Equality Index rankings can be found at www.hrc.org/cei. For additional information contact Michael Cole-Schwartz at email@example.com or 202-423-2885.

The Weather Channel Promotes Preparedness
In an effort to keep the public safe during severe weather, The Weather Channel will promote new standardized hashtags developed by the White House, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the Department of Energy (DOE). These hashtags – #GotFuel #NoFuel and #PowerLineDown – will enable local citizens to report important emergency information, such as downed power lines or whether a gas station is open or not, across social media platforms during severe weather events.
This information can be used by survivors, first responders, FEMA, DOE and utility companies to improve disaster response and recovery efforts. The hashtags will be featured across The Weather Channel properties on TV, online, on mobile and on social to focus the conversation and inform residents before, during and after a weather emergency.
“Keeping the public safe and informed in times of weather emergencies has always been an important mission at The Weather Channel,” said Bryson Koehler, executive vice president and chief information officer at The Weather Company. “The Weather Channel brand offers great scale to help disseminate this important information, reaching 100 million U.S. television households, 100 million monthly unique visitors on Web and more than 110 million app downloads on smartphones and tablets.”
The Weather Company (parent firm of The Weather Channel) will offer ongoing support for this campaign. An upcoming new app focused on hyperlocal weather content will use both open and proprietary data to provide severe weather alerts and forecasts for a user-defined location radius, and it will also incorporate preparedness information relevant to that radius. The app will integrate real-time severe weather data such as National Weather Service alerts, precipitation proximity alerts and lightning data.
The app will include additional preparedness information and tips from the brand’s “Connect with Weather” effort, a co-branded campaign that educates families and communities about the importance of weather preparedness. “Connect with Weather” combines weather and science information from The Weather Channel with safety and preparedness tips from some of the nation’s most trusted non-profit and governmental organizations including the American Red Cross, Save the Children, the American Humane Association and NOAA. To learn more about weather safety preparedness and creating a plan, visit weather.com/ready or contact David Blumenthal at email@example.com or 770-226-2611.

Multicultural Education Alliance Digital Initiative
Last month students in Central Florida were been given a much-needed technology boost, thanks to a partnership between the Multicultural Education Alliance (MEA), Quatro Solutions, Inc., and Bright House Networks. The digital initiative furthers MEA’s commitment to student-centered initiatives to strengthen the educational pipeline of minority students. The first digital initiative was rolled out to the third grade class at Wyndham Lakes Elementary in Orange County.
The educational system in Central Florida has been challenged to adapt to a new era of technology advancements. Due to financial and demographical circumstances, not all students have access to the technology that can prepare them to compete in the workplace. Wendy Rivera, MEA’s Executive Director, has stated that every student should have access to “quality education and cutting edge technology, regardless of a student’s zip code.”
Jose Espejo, Quatro Solutions CEO, developed an affordable, smart tablet that teachers and students can utilize to customize and upload assignments based on their individual needs. “It’s important to all students to have access to technology so they can compete in the work force,” Espejo added. The sleek and modern tablet is compatible with school networks and allows students and teachers to interact in the classroom.
