Cox Donates $1 Million for Tornado Relief
In partnership with The James M. Cox Foundation, Cox Enterprises donated $1 million in support to assist the relief and recovery efforts of the communities affected by the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma. The contribution is a $500,000 donation to the American Red Cross and $500,000 of in-kind support, including public service announcements.
"Cox Enterprises is committed to supporting the victims of this terrible storm," said Jim Kennedy, chairman of Cox Enterprises. "As a company that operates multiple businesses in Oklahoma, we are committed to helping our employees and the communities we serve recover from this disaster. In providing this assistance, we also encourage others to support the local relief and recovery efforts."
"In this difficult time of recovery and rebuilding, our hearts go out to the families affected by the tornadoes," said Percy Kirk, senior vice president and general manager, Cox Communications Oklahoma. "This gift is a symbol of our commitment to our community and it is our hope that it will provide comfort and relief to many."
In addition to the cash donation and in-kind public service announcements, Cox's local media properties in Tulsa are hosting a series of community fundraisers.
Cox's impacted employees also have the opportunity to receive support through the Cox Employee Relief Fund (CERF). Created in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the fund provides essential assistance to Cox employees and their families who are impacted by disasters. Cartoon Networks Launches 4th Annual Move It Movement Tour
Cartoon Network announced plans for its fourth annual Move It Movement Tour, a summer campaign targeting youth 6-14, in partnership with the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition and in support of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative. The 16-market tour will launch on June 8 in Atlanta, closely following the National Physical Fitness & Sports Month in May. The program will travel throughout the country to 16 markets and is sponsored by local cable systems.
The Move It Movement Tour is part of Cartoon Network’s long-established, award-winning pro-social efforts to provide support and encouragement in the ongoing battle against childhood obesity through such varied activities as daily recess, health & wellness education and active after-school involvement.
The Tour will feature multiple activity and learning stations, incorporating core partner organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, NBA/WNBA FIT & NBA Hoop Troop, NFL PLAY 60 and The PGA of America. To help encourage fan turnout, many of the professional league partners will include their local team mascot and cheerleader appearances at tour events whenever possible. A national on-air spot will premier June 3 on Cartoon Network, Boomerang, CartoonNetwork.com, partner organization's websites and Cartoon Network’s Facebook page will highlight the upcoming 2013 tour, its components and online educational materials available at www.MoveItMovement.com.

Hiring Our Heroes at The Cable Show 2013
In an effort to educate skilled veterans, reservists and military spouses about the U.S. cable industry and connect them with companies seeking workers, dozens of companies will be participating in a job fair hosted at the National Cable & Telecommunications Association’s (NCTA) annual convention, The Cable Show 2013.
Cable operators and programming networks as well as technology and software companies will be conducting on-site interviews and testing for nationwide jobs. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in career guidance workshops aimed at improving important skills, such as resume writing and interviewing.
The Hiring Our Heroes job fair will be held on June 11 during The Cable Show 2013, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. This hiring event is being conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation in partnership with NCTA, the Cable & Telecommunications Human Resources Association (CTHRA) and other local and industry partners. Veterans, guardsmen and reservists are invited to attend this job fair. Pre-registration is recommended at www.hiringourheroes.org; however walk-in job seekers are welcome but may not be guaranteed on-site interviews.

Hiring Our Heroes is a nationwide initiative of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation to help veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment. Since March 2011, Hiring Our Heroes has hosted more than 400 hiring fairs in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia; more than 14,100 veterans have been placed in jobs. Red, White and You Winners Announced by Destination America and USA Weekend
Destination America and the national weekly magazine, USA Weekend announced the inaugural winners of the Red, White and You contest that awards two deserving communities a spectacular Fourth of July celebration. Union Beach, N.J., a coastal town still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, and Fayetteville, N.C., a major military community forced to cancel its annual fireworks display at Fort Bragg due to budget cuts were declared the contest winners. Launched in March, the contest asked individuals from across the country to put their patriotism on display to prove why their respective communities were most deserving of an over-the-top Independence Day party.
“Fireworks, fanfare and food are synonymous with the Fourth of July for many families, but lack of resources has forced many American towns to put their patriotic memory-making festivities on hold,” said Marc Etkind, senior vice president of content strategy for Destination America. “In light of natural disasters and budget constraints, Destination America hopes to restore the spirit and tradition of Fourth of July in Union Beach and Fayetteville, two very worthy communities.”
“The nominations were so moving and heartfelt — USA Weekend is grateful to be part of this wonderful outpouring of patriotism and affection for American cities and towns. The Red, White and You contest received more than 3,500 entries from Americans nationwide sharing moving stories of why their towns deserve the all-American celebration. In addition to the grand prize winning communities, Union Beach, N.J. and Fayetteville, N.C.; runner-up communities were awarded $1,000 each to be used toward a local park and recreation department, YMCA/YWCA or Habitat for Humanity. Your Vote. Both Connect a Million Minds and Characters Unite initiatives were 2013 Beacon Award® winners and Your Life. Your Time. Your Vote. was a 2013 Beacon Finalist®. Additionally Characters Unite won the 2013 Golden Beacon® and Connect a Million Minds won the 2012 Golden Beacon®. The Golden Beacon® is awarded to a communications or public affairs initiative that has made an impact within the cable industry and enhanced cable’s image nationwide, it is ACC's highest honor.
