Time Warner Cable Helps Law Enforcement and Military Make Job Transitions

Last week Time Warner Cable sponsored an event in New York City to help law enforcement and armed services personnel successfully transition to careers in the private sector. The May 8-9 conference at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center was held by ASIS International (ASIS), which is the leading organization for security management professionals.

“As one of the country’s leading providers of TV, Internet and phone services, Time Warner Cable has a strong interest in partnering with ASIS and the security industry to ensure that our information technology assets are protected by the latest technologies and the sharpest minds,” said Brian Allen, group vice president and chief security officer, Time Warner Cable. “The men and women in law enforcement and the military are highly trained in all areas of security and the protection of vital assets, making them a natural fit for many companies. We are proud to sponsor this ASIS conference to help these skilled personnel learn how to successfully transition to the private sector.”

As part of the sponsorship, Time Warner Cable helped present the program, “Making the Switch from Public Sector to Private Sector Security,” that is designed to help those who are leaving careers in law enforcement and the military and transitioning into the security profession within the private sector. The May 8 program was followed by a luncheon, where attendees had an opportunity to network and receive career advice from security professionals within the private sector. The Sportsman Channel is sponsoring a unique outreach program that taps an underutilized food source (game meat & fish donated by sportsmen) to feed those in need.   Discovery and Habitat for Humanity Rebuild Areas of Atlantic City

More than 125 Discovery Communications' employees and on-air talent from across the United States, including Cake Boss’ Buddy Valastro and Dave Salmoni of Animal Planet will be in the Atlantic City suburb of Ventnor City, May 16-18 to work with Habitat for Humanity on major home rehabilitations in partnership with residents impacted by Superstorm Sandy. Ventnor City Mayor Mike Bagnell will work alongside Discovery employees and talent for the duration of the build and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will be on site for the second day of the build.

Habitat for Humanity, the 6th largest home builder and the largest private home builder in the United States, works in more than 1,500 locations across the country and was one of the first on the scene for rebuild efforts in the region. Leaders from Habitat for Humanity International and Atlantic County Habitat for Humanity worked closely with Discovery to determine projects where the company's employees and on-air talent could make an impact on recovery efforts already under way.

"Since its inception, Discovery has been dedicated to satisfying viewers' curiosity and making a difference through programs that educate and enlighten, and we also recognize that our mission extends beyond the screen," said David Zaslav, president and CEO, Discovery Communications. "We are proud to partner with Habitat for Humanity on this important ‘Rebuilding Atlantic City' project and to demonstrate the positive impact that businesses can make in answering the call to service."

In conjunction with the rebuilding efforts, Whirlpool is generously donating household appliances including washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, ranges and refrigerators to several homes that were greatly affected by the storm. The 30 appliances will be installed throughout the project by Discovery Communications’ volunteers and Habitat leaders. Whirlpool and Habitat for Humanity have been working together for more than a decade to create decent, affordable housing around the world. Over the past 13 years, Whirlpool has contributed more than $78 million in cash and product to support the mission of Habitat for Humanity.

Discovery Education is also presenting an educational assembly for the students and staff of Atlantic City Public Schools’ Sovereign Avenue School.  The assembly will offer students a sneak peek of the upcoming Discovery Channel series North America, and will include special appearances by Dave Salmoni and Buddy Valastro. For additional information, contact Catherine Frymark at or 240-893-9840.

ACC Announces the 2013 Golden Beacon and Beacon Award Winners

During a dinner ceremony on May 9, the Association of Cable Communicators (ACC) announced the winners of the 2013 Golden Beacon and Beacon Awards®, honoring excellence in cable communications and public affairs. ACC awarded the Golden Beacon, the association’s highest honor, to Characters Unite, USA Network. ACC also presented 39 Beacon Awards representing work by MSOs, cable systems, and programming networks in categories such as community relations, public service announcements and social media communications. The Beacon Awards Ceremony rounded out Thursday events during ACC’s annual conference FORUM 2013: The Value Proposition: Know It. Sell It., held May 8-10 in Washington, DC.

“Across the nation cable communicators promote their company’s products, contribute to the bottom line and improve the quality of life in the communities their companies serve,” said Pete Abel, 2013 Beacon Awards chair and senior vice president, corporate communications, Suddenlink. “The Beacon Awards celebrate the very significant role cable communicators play in our industry’s success and recognize the best of those efforts.”

ACC presented the 2013 Golden Beacon, awarded to a communications or public affairs initiative that has made an impact within the cable industry and enhanced cable’s image nationwide, to Characters Unite, USA Network.

Characters Unite is USA Network's public service campaign dedicated to combating hate and discrimination while promoting diversity and acceptance. In partnership with leading nonprofit organizations, the multiplatform initiative focuses on a wide range of civil and human rights issues, including racism, hate crimes, bullying, access for people with disabilities, gender discrimination, homophobia and religious intolerance. While the effort is year-round, USA designated February as Characters Unite Month, a time when the Network shines a brighter spotlight on the importance of tolerance and mutual respect. This year, USA dramatically expanded the month-long effort with more on-air programming, digital content and special community events than the Network had ever done before.

ACC members chose the 2013 Beacon Award winners during an extensive judging process. The high-quality Beacon Award entries submitted this year continue to demonstrate the cable industry's commitment to communications and public affairs and represent company initiatives implemented over the past year in areas such as events and observances, integrated communications and Web sites.
