  C-SPAN, HISTORY and USA are ACC's 2013 Golden Beacon Award Nominees

The Association of Cable Communicators announced this week the three nominees for the association's highest honor, the Golden Beacon Award®. Nominees are:

  • C-SPAN at the Republican National Convention, C-SPAN Networks
  • Mankind Connected: A Global Teach-In, HISTORY
  • Characters Unite, USA Network

ACC will honor the Golden Beacon Award® nominees and announce the winner during the Beacon Awards Dinner and Ceremony on Thursday, May 9, 2013, in the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. The ceremony takes place during ACC's annual conference, FORUM 2013 - The Value Proposition: Know It. Sell It.

"The Golden Beacon is ACC's highest honor, presented each year to a single communications initiative that has had a profound and lasting effect on the industry and its various stakeholders," said Pete Abel, 2013 Beacon Awards chair and senior vice president, corporate communications, Suddenlink. "Over the past year, three industry programs, USA Network's Characters Unite, C-SPAN Networks' C-SPAN at the Republican National Convention, and HISTORY's Mankind Connected: A Global Teach-In, have exemplified the cable industry's commitment to improving the quality of life in the communities we serve, locally and nationally."

Characters Unite is USA Network's public service campaign dedicated to combating hate and discrimination while promoting diversity and acceptance. In partnership with leading nonprofit organizations, the multiplatform initiative focuses on a wide range of civil and human rights issues, including racism, hate crimes, bullying, access for people with disabilities, gender discrimination, homophobia and religious intolerance. While the effort is year-round, USA designated February as Characters Unite Month, a time when the Network shines a brighter spotlight on the importance of tolerance and mutual respect. This year, USA dramatically expanded the month-long effort with more on-air programming, digital content and special community events than the Network had ever done before.

C-SPAN is known for gavel-to-gavel coverage of the House and Senate, and every four years, brings its signature style of coverage to the presidential campaign with the national conventions serving as the centerpiece. At the Republican National Convention in Tampa, C-SPAN proactively reinforced that brand with key publics and affiliate partners and reminded the political community and the cable industry of C-SPAN's reputation in the sphere of politics and government. Bright House's role as the official telecommunications provider for the convention helped C-SPAN promote the message of cable's public service, as well as the specific message that complete coverage of the conventions is available to customers in the Tampa area thanks to Bright House.

In conjunction with the November 2012 premiere of the epic 12-hour television event Mankind The Story of All of Us, HISTORY partnered with UNESCO to create a unique, educational event for young students: Mankind Connected: A Global Teach-In. The global webinar featured satellite live feeds from Liberty, Missouri and Vina del Mar, Chile as well as participation from all seven continents, including Antarctica.

ACC's Golden Beacon Award® recognizes a communications and public affairs initiative that has made an impact within the cable industry, while enhancing cable's image nationwide.   Time Warner Cable Announces "Stem in Sports" Campaign

During a White House Science Fair event, Time Warner Cable launched a new segment of its $100 million campaign to inspire the next generation of problem solvers by connecting young people to the wonders of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The "STEM in Sports" campaign will offer parents, coaches and other adults the opportunity to get kids interested in STEM by highlighting the roles these subjects play in sports.

"Time Warner Cable applauds President Obama for his Educate to Innovate initiative, which raises awareness of STEM as vital to the country's continued economic growth," said Glenn Britt, Chairman and CEO of Time Warner Cable. "More than 50 percent of the fastest-growing occupations in this country require math or science skills. CAMM is inspiring young people to become interested in these important subject areas, and our STEM in Sports campaign will broaden the appeal of this initiative even further."

Professional football player Victor Cruz, who joined Time Warner Cable executives at the White House event, will appear in a new Connect a Million Minds public service announcement to explain how math and science are important in football, and critical to students' future success.

"On and off the field, science and math are a winning combination," said Cruz. "I'm personally committed to helping the next generation succeed, and letting them know that the path to success is taking an interest in these important subjects, even though they may be hard. It is an honor to be at the White House representing Time Warner Cable and I'm thrilled to be part of the Connect a Million Minds campaign."

In addition to public service announcements, the connectamillionminds.com website will feature a new STEM in Sports microsite. The microsite will feature videos of athletes discussing how STEM subjects impact their sports. It will also have downloadable educational materials that provide parents and coaches with ideas on how to infuse STEM learning into sports. In addition to Cruz, athletes that have agreed to participate in the STEM in Sports campaign include Ian Poulter, Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon. Time Warner Cable will also hold STEM in Sports trivia contests in which Cruz, through his @TeamVic Twitter handle, will ask fun sport questions related to STEM.   FORUM 2013 Opens May 8th

Join your colleagues the evening of May 8 as FORUM opens with a Welcome Reception from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the Hyatt Regency Washington. After the Welcome to Washington Breakfast and Annual Meeting at 8:30 am, noted political observer, Norm Ornstein, Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, will open FORUM at 9:00 am with his unique insights on the current state of national politics and how they may impact the cable telecommunications industry. He will comment on Congress, the Obama Administration and where he sees the Federal Communications Commission stepping in or stepping out of regulating cable and the Internet.

Other topics and sessions at FORUM include, the Net Generation’s Views on the Future of Cable; Executives on Call: The Key Communicators; Social Media's Role in Meeting Your Goals; Cable and the Media, Are we Communicating?; Communications as a Content Factory and a luncheon keynote on Crisis Communications. Thursday concludes with the Beacon Awards Dinner and Ceremony as we celebrate the best of the best cable communicators. Friday morning closes FORUM 2013 by hosting a networking breakfast with key industry executives.

The theme, The Value Proposition: Know It, Sell It, is metaphor for communications professionals. ACC members are the chief communicators of value. ‘Telling and selling’ that inimitable value proposition is key not only for our industry but for own professional relevancy.

  Comcast and NBC Universal Team Up for 12th Comcast Cares Day

More than 70,000 Comcast and NBCUniversal employees, their family and friends, and community partners across the country spent Saturday, April 27, giving back to their communities as part of Comcast Cares Day, the nation’s largest single-day corporate volunteer effort. In its 12th year, Comcast Cares Day also went international for the first time with NBCUniversal managing projects in England, France, Germany and New Zealand. This year marks more than 3 million volunteer hours and half a million volunteers since Comcast Cares Day first began in 2001.

“Comcast Cares Day speaks to the heart of our company,” said Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and CEO, Comcast Corporation. “As we celebrate Comcast’s 50th anniversary, I am extremely honored to participate this year alongside tens of thousands of Comcast and NBCUniversal employees, their family members and friends across the country and around the world to make a meaningful difference that will have a lasting impact on the communities we serve.”

On Saturday, volunteers contributed their time and energy by providing maintenance, supplies and makeovers to local schools, parks and community centers. Comcast Cares Day also took place during Earth Week, which is widely supported by NBCUniversal’s Green is Universal initiative. Many planet-friendly projects such as building community gardens, cleaning beaches and riverbanks, and planting trees added to the diverse line-up of projects. Overall, during this year’s Comcast Cares Day, more than 700 projects took place across the country and internationally, including projects in communities where Comcast and NBCUniversal employees work together, including New York City, Los Angeles and Orlando.

Comcast and NBCUniversal also partnered with many non-profit community organizations and local chapters of the National Urban League and the National Council of La Raza, who worked side by side with Comcast Cares Day volunteers. Additionally, teams from Comcast and NBCUniversal partnered with City Year, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Boys and Girls Clubs of America, along with hundreds of other local community organizations.

  Connect the Dots, Discovery Communications' New Initiative

Discovery Communications announced “Connect the Dots,” a new multimedia, national STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education initiative designed to provide pathways for kids to achieve today and lead tomorrow by inspiring interest in STEM subjects and careers within industries looking for highly skilled workers. By connecting kids, parents and schools with all of Discovery’s STEM programs across its networks, education and digital platforms, “Connect the Dots” will help make STEM a critical part of kids’ lives, prepare them for the jobs of the future and inspire the next great discovery.

Programs under “Connect the Dots” include: the launch of the Discovery Education STEM Camp program, offering after school and summer resources for educators and parents at no cost; the new science-focused series The Big Brain Theory: Pure Genius, searching for the next great innovator on Discovery Channel; a partnership between Science Channel, its series How Its Made and America’s manufacturers to promote careers in the skilled trades; and the Lumosity Education Access Program (LEAP), a no-cost program for K-12 schools that seeks to study the effects of cognitive training in the classroom.

“Our kids are the next generation of innovators, problem solvers and game changers, and we need them to take on the planet’s challenges and shape a bright, healthy future by embracing STEM careers,” said David Zaslav, President and CEO of Discovery Communications. “Through its unique position as a company founded on igniting curiosity across generations, and with science, technology, engineering and math in our DNA, Discovery is proud to utilize its platforms to help connect the dots between learning and living, theory and practice, algebra and video game design – and inspire the next generation of innovators and leaders in STEM.”

As part of its ongoing commitment to promoting STEM, Discovery Education announced the launch of Discovery Education STEM Camp, a series of standards-aligned curricula available at no cost to schools, districts, non-profit organizations and parents for use as part of summer camps, after-school learning opportunities, and other educational programs. Discovery Education STEM Camp combines hands-on and virtual labs, engineering challenges, digital investigations, interactive videos and career connections designed to inspire and engage students in learning about STEM subjects.

Launching in the summer, STEM Camp will be deployed in conjunction with the Afterschool Alliance, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's Summer of Learning Initiative and the Chicago Public Schools. The program is designed to support the grand challenges of science issued by the National Academy of Engineers, with curricula built around the STEM-related topics of water, urban infrastructure and energy.   2013 Beacon Awards Finalists Announced

The Association of Cable Communicators (ACC) recently announced the names of the finalists for the 2013 Beacon Awards honoring excellence in cable communications and public affairs. The winners of the 2013 Beacon Awards will be announced during the Beacon Awards Dinner and Ceremony on Thursday, May 9, 2013, in the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill during ACC's annual conference FORUM 2013: The Value Proposition: Know It. Sell It.

"Cable communicators make vital contributions to the bottom line of their companies and industry by telling cable's story, building constructive relationships with stakeholders, promoting products and services, and improving the quality of life for the customers and the communities they serve," said Pete Abel, 2013 Beacon Awards chair and senior vice president, corporate communications, Suddenlink Communications. "The Beacon Awards recognize the best of this work."

Forty-one ACC members, cable communications and public affairs professionals, chose the 2013 Beacon Award finalists during an extensive judging process. The Beacon Award entries submitted this year demonstrate the cable industry's commitment to communications and public affairs representing initiatives implemented over the past year in areas such as community relations, events and observances, and social media communications.
