  Norman Ornstein to Keynote FORUM 2013

Noted political observer, Norm Ornstein will open FORUM with his unique insights on the current state of national politics and how they may impact the cable telecommunications industry. He will comment on Congress, the Obama Administration and where he sees the Federal Communications Commission stepping in or stepping out of regulating cable and the Internet.

Ornstein is a long-time monitor of Congress and politics and writes a weekly column for Roll Call called "Congress Inside Out" and since 1982 he has been an election eve analyst for CBS News. He was co-director of the AEI-Brookings Election Reform Project and participated in AEI's Election Watch series. Ornstein also served as a senior counselor to the Continuity of Government Commission and led a working group of scholars and practitioners that helped shape the law, known as "McCain-Feingold," reforming the campaign financing system.

He is a Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Ornstein is an author of many books including The Permanent Campaign and Its Future (AEI Press, 2000); The Broken Branch: How Congress Is Failing America and How to Get It Back on Track, with Thomas E. Mann (Oxford University Press, 2006), and most recently, the New York Times bestseller, It's Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided With the New Politics of Extremism, also with Tom Mann, published by Basic Books.   2013 New York City Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk

On Sunday, April 14 more than 1,500 residents from across the New York City area participated in The Lustgarten Foundation's New York City Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk at Hudson River Park. The event raised nearly $400,000 and through the support of Cablevision, 100% of the money raised will go directly to funding pancreatic cancer research. The Lustgarten Foundation is committed to advancing the scientific and medical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of pancreatic cancer.   Save $100, Register for FORUM by April 30

FORUM 2013 has moved to Washington, D.C and is just weeks away, May 8-10, in the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. The program outline and registration information is available on the ACC Web site at https://www.cablecommunicators.org/forum.php. Register by April 30 to save $100 off the on-site fee of $1,000. Your full conference registration includes admission to the Beacon Awards dinner that wraps up FORUM activities on Thursday.

The theme, The Value Proposition: Know It, Sell It, is metaphor for communications professionals. ACC members are the chief communicators of value. ‘Telling and selling’ that inimitable value proposition is key not only for our industry but for own professional relevancy.

  1st Annual Florida Ice Cream Festival, Here’s The Scoop

Bright House Networks recently partnered with Magnify Credit Union, The Ledger Media Group, Hall Communications and the City of Lakeland to re-create an old fashioned neighborhood experience with the 1st Annual Florida Ice Cream Festival. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Magnify Life Foundation and its efforts to be a leader in environmental awareness, financial literacy, community involvement and the Detroit Tigers Foundation of Florida. Event organizers anticipated 7,000-10,000 individuals; however, final records show approximately 30,000 people attended the festival. The event’s management hope to make it an annual event and for it to become the largest ice cream festival in the United States.

The Florida Ice Cream Festival created a fundraising opportunity for area schools and youth programs. Parent-Teacher organizations, schools, and other groups shared in the benefits that the event offered by promoting the purchase of tickets on the website www.FloridaIceCreamFestival.org.

Participating schools received a rebate of 100% of their ticket sales, a fundraising kit, Florida Ice Cream Festival posters, branding during the event, and their school name listed on the event website along with other benefits. The festival also helped to teach students the critical importance of philanthropy and volunteerism in building a better society, a fundamental goal of the Magnify Life Foundation. Students are able to tap into their creativity, build self-confidence, and, importantly, learn the importance of philanthropy through fundraising for their schools.   Cartoon Network Speaks Up Against Bullying

Cartoon Network continues its vital conversation with kids and families about speaking up against bullying with a special presentation of "The Bully Effect" on Sunday, April 28 at 5:30 p.m. EDT and 8:00 p.m. PDT. Produced in partnership with Cartoon Network as part of its award-winning Stop Bullying: Speak Up initiative and presented commercial-free, the program is a half-hour CNN original documentary abridged for family audiences and features additional original content, including a special introduction by Cartoon Network President/COO Stuart Snyder as well as a candid conversation with CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, who hosts the documentary and is a recognized advocate for bullying prevention.

Concurrent with and immediately following both telecasts author and renowned bullying prevention expert Rosalind Wiseman will host an exclusive, live online chat at StopBullyingSpeakUp.com to answer questions from youth, parents and educators.

Cartoon Network has enlisted Cable in the Classroom (CIC) to help promote both the special telecast of "The Bully Effect" and the concurrent online chat for families with Rosalind Wiseman to the education community and to schools across the country. Following its mandate of supporting visionary, sensible and effective use of media in homes, schools, and communities, CIC will encourage educators, students and their families to watch the commercial-free documentary presentation and to participate in educator-led discussions the following week.
