The 2013 Beacon Awards continue the easy entry format first introduced in 2011. Submissions may be sent electronically and have been redesigned to cut down on the time needed to complete the entry. Entry supporting materials may be scanned and sent as attachments and videos may be sent as links to where they are stored on a company Web site, YouTube or other Internet storage site.

The Beacon Awards Ceremony, the evening of May 9, will be a highlight of ACC’s annual conference, FORUM 2013, May 8-10 in Washington, DC.   Suddenlink Fishing Tourney Nets $24,000 for Hospice

Hospice of San Angelo received a check for $24,000, the record breaking proceeds from the Suddenlink Tony Gibson Memorial Fishing Tournament held at O.H. Ivie Reservoir in San Angelo, Texas. The donation was presented at the event, following the awarding of checks to the tournament winners.

San Angelo resident Ronnie Wallace won the tournament with a record-setting 29.7 pounds of fish in his five-bass limit. Included in his catch was the tournament’s largest fish, a 9.79-pound bass. Wallace won $2,200 for first place and $785 for the Big Bass prize. The under-17 division winner was Andy Ortega of Odessa, Texas. He won a $200 gift certificate from retailer Field and Streams Sporting Goods.

The tournament is named in memory of avid fisherman and San Angelo Bass Club member Tony Gibson. Gibson was a winner at the first Suddenlink fishing tournament in 2009. He received care from Hospice of San Angelo before he died in October that same year.

The tournament is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Hospice of San Angelo, and this year’s donation was the largest in tournament history. Since 2010, the Suddenlink tournament has raised $71,000. For additional information, contact Gene Regan at 314-315-9644 or

  FORUM Early Registration Deadline is March 31—Save $200

FORUM 2013 is moving to Washington, D.C., and will be held May 8-10, in the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. Session outlines and registration information is available on the ACC Web site at Register by March 31 to save $200 off the on-site fee of $1000. Your full conference registration includes admission to the Beacon Awards dinner that wraps up FORUM activities on Thursday.

The theme, The Value Proposition: Know It, Sell It, is metaphor for communications professionals. ACC members are the chief communicators of value. ‘Telling and selling’ that inimitable value proposition is key not only for our industry but for own professional relevancy.

Attend FORUM 2013 as we take on what it means to communicate value in an industry where meeting customer expectations is a never ending task; technology trends are fast and furious and distinguishing business partners from competitors is…well, it is complicated.   Introducing the Connectivist

There is a new digital platform featuring bold and entertaining content to connect the dots among technology, innovation, Web culture and TV.  The Connectivist (, an online magazine created in partnership with the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, is dedicated to exploring how entertainment, technology and the consumer experience intersect and “connect” ideas in today’s digital age.

  Master Course: Amplify Your Brand with Passion & Purpose

On Wednesday afternoon, immediately prior to the start of FORUM 2013, ACC is offering the Master Course: Amplify Your Brand with Passion & Purpose: Achieve Your Personal and Career Goals by Creating a Strong, Authentic Personal Brand. Join a dynamic group of cable communicators with diverse experiences and a commitment to moving forward in search of their full potential. The course instructor is Kimberly Maki, corporate vice president, corporate communication and online, Bright House Networks, who has presented this same course for a number of organizations including Lifetime and the Florida Hospital Foundation.

Registration for the Master Course is $149 (not included with FORUM registration) and you do not have to register for FORUM to attend this session.   TN First Lady Kicks Off New Landscape Renovation Project with HGTV

Tennessee First Lady Crissy Haslam recently hosted HGTV at the Tennessee Residence to film the building of the kitchen and cutting garden, kicking off Phase II of the Tennessee Residence Foundation’s project to help renovate and restore the Tennessee Residence grounds. The kitchen and cutting garden will promote local agriculture and farm-to-table sustainability at the state’s executive residence. HGTV filmed the groundbreaking of the garden, as well as interviews with Governor and First Lady Haslam, the Tennessee Residence chef, the project’s landscape architect, and other guests. The garden will be featured on and in a special, “HGTV Yard Takeover,” to air in May 2013.

“Tennessee has unique traditions in agriculture and home gardening,” Mrs. Haslam said.
“Phase II of the landscape renovation project, which includes the addition of a kitchen and cutting garden, will provide an exciting opportunity to highlight these special traditions with visitors from across the state and country.”

As chair of the Tennessee Executive Residence and Preservation Foundation, Mrs. Haslam has been helping to generate private funds for the landscape renovation project. Phase I of the project was completed in fall of 2012, which included the restoration of the historic lily pond garden, the entrance to Conservation Hall, and the Great Lawn. Tennessee companies Nissan North America and Scripps Networks Interactive (HGTV’s parent company), will partner to assist with Phase II of the project, donating funds towards the building of the kitchen and cutting garden.

“We are very grateful for Nissan and Scripps’ help in building a kitchen and cutting garden at the Tennessee Residence,” Mrs. Haslam said. “I have been so proud of the support generously given by a host of Tennessee businesses, organizations, family foundations and individuals who have contributed towards this next phase of the project to restore the grounds of an important landmark for our state.” For additional information, contact Cindy McConkey at 865-560-3976 or
