  Two Weeks Remain to Enter the 2013 Beacon Awards

The 2013 Beacon Awards entry deadline is only 14 days from today, March 22. Do not delay any longer; collect the data and related items you need to create a strong, award winning Beacon Award entry today. If you need an entry brochure or directions, please go to the ACC Web site at https://www.cablecommunicators.org/pdf/2013_Beacon_Award_Call_for_Entries.pdf.

The 2013 Beacon Awards continue the easy entry format first introduced in 2011. Submissions may be sent electronically and have been redesigned to cut down on the time needed to complete the entry. However, individuals may continue to send their entries by mail or a delivery service and there is the option to send hard copies of supplemental supporting materials as well.

The Beacon Awards have been cable’s highest recognition of communications and public affairs excellence since 1989. All entrants need for a Beacon Award submission is a one-and-a-half to two-page project summary, completed entry form and payment, all of which may be emailed to ACC. The Beacon Awards Ceremony, the evening of May 9, will be one of the highlights of ACC’s annual conference, FORUM 2013, May 8-10 in Washington, DC. Again, the Call for Entries brochure is also available on the ACC Web site by going to the Awards tab, and dropping down to the Beacon Awards area. All Beacon Award entries must represent work executed and results achieved between May 5, 2012, and March 22, 2013.   Comcast & NBCUniversal Double Commitment to Hiring Veterans

Comcast and NBCUniversal have achieved their publicly announced three-year goal of hiring 1,000 veterans as part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation's Hiring Our Heroes initiative two years ahead of schedule and the company will double its pledge by committing to hire an additional 1,000 U.S. veterans by 2015.

Hiring Our Heroes launched in March 2011 as nationwide effort to help veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment. As a partner in this effort, Comcast and NBCUniversal have hired 1,000 veterans in the last year to work in a variety of positions at all levels within both organizations. Comcast and NBCUniversal's pledge contributes to the Chamber's Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign, the largest private sector commitment of its kind with a goal of hiring half a million veterans and military spouses by the end of 2014. To date, businesses have pledged to hire more than 210,000 veterans and military spouses, and 93,000 hires have been confirmed.

"Comcast and NBCUniversal are thrilled to have reached our original hiring commitment early," said William Strahan, executive vice president of human resources for Comcast Cable. "We have had the privilege of hiring extremely talented men and women over the last year and we look forward to making our workforce even stronger with our next wave of veterans joining our team."

"To move the needle on veteran unemployment, it will take companies increasing their levels of veteran hiring and Comcast and NBCUniversal have stepped up to do just that," said Lt. Col. Kevin Schmiegel (ret.), executive director of Hiring Our Heroes. "Comcast and NBCUniversal are among the biggest supporters of our program and through their dedication and leadership, we are seeing a difference in how businesses across America are recognizing the value in hiring a veteran."

Comcast and NBCUniversal have fostered a culture that supports veterans and reservists within its ranks. Veterans are invited to join employee resource groups where there is a community among veterans. The Comcast and NBCUniversal Veterans Network employee resource groups serve as a base of support for members, in several ways, including a mentoring program and events focused on growing the professional and personal development of veterans and their allies.

This spring, NBC News and the Chamber will launch a jobs and education resource portal to connect veterans and their families with up-to-date tools and information to help them in their transition after returning home from military service. The centralized hub will feature the best resources from leading industry partners, in addition to NBC News features, and family, spouse and community resources.

"Our goal is to offer veterans tangible tools that help them with their transition back into the workforce and civilian life," commented Beth Colleton, senior vice president, corporate social responsibility, NBCUniversal. "We look forward to working with the entire Comcast and NBCUniversal family in collaboration with stellar partners like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation to continue to expand our veteran initiatives."

Comcast is also offering its programming resources to help veterans find careers at other employers through programs such as the Hire a Veteran On Demand initiative as well as engaging in numerous partnerships with veteran service organizations in local communities. From March 15-28, Hiring Our Heroes will host a series of major job fairs in different communities across America, including Washington D.C., New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Fort Hood, TX, Fayetteville, NC and Dayton, Ohio with support from Comcast and NBCUniversal.   FORUM Opens May 8 in Washington, DC

FORUM 2013 is moving to Washington, D.C., and will be held May 8-10, in the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. Session outlines and registration information is now available on the ACC Web site. Register by March 31 to save $200 off the on-site fee of $1000. Your full conference registration includes admission to the Beacon Awards dinner that wraps up FORUM activities on Thursday.

The theme, The Value Proposition: Know It, Sell It, is metaphor for communications professionals. ACC members are the chief communicators of value. ‘Telling and selling’ that inimitable value proposition is key not only for our industry but for own professional relevancy.

Attend FORUM 2013 as we take on what it means to communicate value in an industry where meeting customer expectations is a never ending task; technology trends are fast and furious and distinguishing business partners from competitors is…well, it is complicated.   Congratulation Joe Richardson, Time Warner Cable

Joe Richardson, manager, community relations, Time Warner Cable, North East Ohio/Western Pennsylvania was the first cable communicator to submit a Beacon Award entry. ACC received his entry on February 22, a full month before the deadline of March 22. Way to go Joe, hopefully you will inspire your colleagues to send in their entries early!

  Music Choice Amp Your Campus Social Media Challenge

Music Choice is teaming with Comcast Cable to find the best college town in the US.  Amp Your Campus pits 40 campus locations against each other to claim bragging rights and win the ultimate Amp Your Campus prize – a private concert right in their community featuring RCA Recording artists Hot Chelle Rae and Sammy Adams.   Get Involved with ACC by Volunteering to Judge the Beacon Awards

Are you interested in connecting with your fellow cable communicators? ACC needs volunteers for 2013 Beacon Award Judging, FORUM 2013 and ACC Board Committees. Get involved and help mold ACC programs to meet the needs of cable communicators.

Beacon Award Judges help determine the finalists and winners of the 2013 Beacon Awards. FORUM Committee Members will help determine the agenda and promote FORUM 2013 to the industry. Board Committees develop association programs and help members get connected to one another. On Wednesday afternoon, immediately prior to the start of FORUM 2013, ACC is offering the Master Course: Amplify Your Brand with Passion & Purpose: Achieve Your Personal and Career Goals by Creating a Strong, Authentic Personal Brand. Join a dynamic group of cable communicators with diverse experiences and a commitment to moving forward in search of their full potential. The course instructor is Kimberly Maki, corporate vice president, corporate communication and online, Bright House Networks who has presented this same course for a number of organizations including the Lifetime and the Florida Hospital Foundation.

Registration for the Master Course is $149 (not included with FORUM registration) and you do not have to attend FORUM to attend this session. This fun event provides a unique, enlightening approach to professional and personal development as it combines executive presence, career coaching and personal branding.
