FORUM is ACC's redesigned, engaging, two-day (including the Beacon Awards® Gala), national, educational conference designed for cable communications and public affairs professionals who have responsibilities that incorporate communications, government affairs, public relations, customer service, publicity or any combination of these duties. Delegates range from front line employees to senior executives who share innovations, explore industry trends and discuss technological advances affecting the full spectrum of communications and public affairs issues. During FORUM, cable industry professionals strengthen their communications and public affairs skills, share best practices, and understand how communications and public affairs impact their organizations.
Running through August 31, the full conference registration fee is $900 (September 1 and after $1,000), and includes a ticket to the Beacon Awards luncheon program on Thursday starting at 12:45 pm. Individual day registration rates for either Wednesday (9/12) or Thursday (9/13) are $550. Additionally, individual tickets for the Beacon Awards luncheon are available for $150 per person. ESPN Pledges $1 Million to The Boys & Girls Club and Family Center of Bristol
ESPN announced earlier this week its pledge of a lead contribution of $1 million toward construction of a new Boys and Girls Club and Family Center, in addition to its $400,000 gift in 2009 for land acquisition. The announcement was made by ESPN Executive Chairman George Bodenheimer in commemoration of ESPN’s upcoming 33rd anniversary on September 7.
The proposed 38,000-square foot facility will house expansion of education and technology programs, a Teen Center, an enhanced Arts and Crafts Center, and will host a variety of athletic events in its 14,000-square foot field house for children in Bristol and across Connecticut. In addition, the Club plans to offer services for adults and seniors in the community. It will replace an 85-year old building that no longer has the space or the resources to meet the growing and changing needs of children. The new building will offer programs for people of all ages and will be a focal point for a variety of activities in downtown Bristol.
Bodenheimer is an honorary chairman of the Boys and Girls Club and Family Center’s Capital Campaign and is an alumnus of a Boys and Girls Club. ESPN’s commitment to the Boys and Girls Club and Family Center organization spans more than 30 years of support, including the Imagine Nation Museum, the outreach program at Cambridge Park, the school-based programs, preschool programs and a playground construction project at Brackett Park. In addition, ESPN employees regularly volunteer at the Club’s sites through the company’s corporate outreach initiative called Team ESPN, which encompasses ESPN's multi-faceted initiatives, including volunteerism, corporate giving and cause marketing, while also utilizing its diverse media assets. Through Team ESPN, ESPN employees and fans join together to make a difference in the communities in which ESPN works. Its slogan is “Fans Helping Fans.”

Discovery Communications Highlights Job Opportunities in Healthcare
Discovery Communications recently launched new online and on-air resources highlighting job opportunities in the healthcare industry as part of its ongoing ‘Discover Your Skills’ initiative, a multimedia public affairs campaign designed to provide unemployed and underemployed Americans with access to critical resources for obtaining marketable job skills and expertise, and to raise awareness of career opportunities in skilled trade industries. There are projected to be more than four million job openings in the healthcare industry by 2015, many of which require just a two-year degree or less in training.
The new content includes online training and information resources focused on healthcare careers on www.DiscoverYourSkills.com, including resources from Virtual Career Network – Healthcare, as well as two new public service announcements (PSAs) that have begun airing on Discovery Fit & Health. The PSAs feature Discovery Fit & Health on-air personalities and healthcare professionals Dr. Jan Garavaglia from Dr. G: Medical Examiner and Dr. Janet Taylor of Facing Trauma. The PSAs can be viewed online at www.DiscoverYourSkills.com.
‘Discover Your Skills’ was launched in May of 2011 to help address the growing gap between the needs of employers and the skills of America’s workforce. It has leveraged Discovery’s resources to highlight career opportunities in skilled trades, and expressed the importance of training workers to fill critical jobs in manufacturing, health care, energy, technology, construction and other industries. Previous ‘Discover Your Skills’ PSAs have featured Mike Rowe of Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe, Buddy Valastro of TLC’s Cake Boss and Lou Diamond Phillips of Military Channel’s An Officer and a Movie, among others, and they have aired across Discovery’s portfolio of U.S. networks.
As part of ‘Discover Your Skills,’ Discovery is partnering with Skills for America's Future, a non-partisan partnership of businesses and community colleges, announced by President Obama, with a mission to address the dual problems of unemployment and the difficulty many employers face in finding workers with the right skills. Discovery President and CEO David Zaslav is a member of the Advisory Board of Skills for America's Future. The U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Department of Labor, and Skills for America's Future collaborated with Discovery on the development of DiscoverYourSkills.com.
Additionally, as part of the effort, Discovery has partnered with Montgomery College, in its hometown of Montgomery County, Md., to launch career development programs for Montgomery College students. The programs include career panels highlighting job opportunities in the media industry, workshops on resume writing and interview techniques, group and one-on-one mentorships with Discovery professionals, and internship opportunities at the company. ‘Discover Your Skills' is part of Discovery's Impact programs, which leverage the power of Discovery's brands, businesses and employees to give back and make a direct impact on the communities in which we live and work.
