Nickelodeon and First Lady Obama Team Up in London to Encourage Kids to Move

Nickelodeon’s The Big Help pro-social campaign for kids teamed up with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let's Move! initiative to host Let’s Move! London, an event for more than 1,000 American military children and American and British students on July 27, the opening day of the 2012 Olympics. Let’s Move! London, co-sponsored by Let’s Move!, Nickelodeon’s The Big Help, and the U.S. Department of State, included sports stations, musical performances and appearances by Olympic and Paralympic legends including members of the U.S. delegation along with David Beckham, Bart Conner, Nadia Comaneci, Teresa Edwards, Emily Hughes, Sarah Hughes, Shawn Johnson, Dikembe Mutombo, Dara Torres, members of the 2012 US Track and Field Team and Manchester United legends, among others.

During Let’s Move! London, kids had an opportunity to get into the Olympic spirit and get active at activity stations with the NBA and USA Basketball, U.S. Tennis Association, Manchester United, USA Field Hockey, USA Track and Field and Right to Play. The event also featured performances from The Wanted, Mark Ronson, Katy B., the University of Florida Gator Marching Band, the Power Rangers and special appearances from Nickelodeon’s Jeff Sutphen, DJ J Boogie, and SpongeBob SquarePants.

This event is part of the First Lady’s work to turn the inspiration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games into action by getting more kids healthy and active. In May, the First Lady joined U.S. Olympians, Paralympians and London hopefuls to announce a nationwide commitment to get more than 1.7 million American children active as part of her Let’s Move! initiative to solve the problem of childhood obesity in a generation.

In March, Mrs. Obama welcomed Mrs. Samantha Cameron, wife of British Prime Minister David Cameron, to the United States by hosting a mini-Olympic event for local school children and in April, Mrs. Obama spoke at the Opening Ceremony for the 2012 Warrior Games. Mrs. Obama also invited Americans to start or join Let’s Move! Olympic Fun Day Meetups on July 28th, the first day of competition in London. In cities and towns all across the country, friends, family and neighbors came together to participate in Olympic-inspired games and activities to not just cheer on Team USA, but to live up to the example they set.

Last year, Nickelodeon teamed up with Let’s Move! to celebrate its 8th annual Worldwide Day of Play, when the network once again suspended programming for three hours to encourage kids and families to get up and get active. The Big Help is Nickelodeon’s pro-social commitment to engage kids to take action and make a difference in their world. The initiative allows kids to connect to their passions by participating in Big Help Actions, which are service opportunities designed to engage kids in specific real world activities that affect the world around them. The campaign focuses on issues that are important to and affect kids, including health and wellness, the environment, education, and community service.

Time Warner Cable is Official Sponsor of the Enterprise Space Shuttle Pavilion

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum recently announced that Time Warner Cable has been named an official sponsor of Space Shuttle Enterprise’s 2012 arrival into New York City and of its Space Shuttle Pavilion home built on top of the museum’s flight deck. The Enterprise was hoisted onto the flight deck on June 6. The grand opening of the Space Shuttle Pavilion to the public was July 19, and Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt participated in the event.

Additionally, Time Warner Cable became a sponsor of the Intrepid Museum, which in return has been named a signature partner in New York City for Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) program. CAMM is an initiative that inspires students to acquire skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to become the problem solvers of tomorrow and help America successfully compete in a global economy. Similarly, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’s own education program reaches thousands of New York school children each year, including through its fully developed STEM program.

The sponsorship brings a significant number of benefits to both Time Warner Cable and the Intrepid Museum. Time Warner Cable is included on the Intrepid’s marketing and advertising materials that promote the Space Shuttle Enterprise exhibit, while Time Warner Cable promotes the shuttle on television advertising, direct mail and social media. Beginning in early July, Time Warner Cable customers had access to exclusive footage of the Enterprise’s journey to the Intrepid by tuning to Local On Demand (Channel 1110).

Customers also will be provided with free and discounted access to the Intrepid through customer appreciation events, which will be announced this fall and in 2013. The company plans to utilize the Intrepid as a venue to host premiers of upcoming cable television series for its customers. Finally, the Intrepid serves as a location for community volunteer activities of Time Warner Cable’s VetNet program, which is comprised of employees who are military veterans or active reservists.

Discovery Networks International Launched its First Social TV Application

Discovery Networks International (DNI) recently launched its first ever social TV application integrating social networks with its programming, piloted first in Latin America. The new app, which debuted on Discovery Home & Health during the popular show Say Yes to the Dress, allows viewers to interact with on-air content via their Facebook and Twitter accounts. Social TV will continue to roll out within DNI's portfolio of Facebook pages and Twitter accounts around the world, with additional launches planned in Brazil, United Kingdom and Germany and Italy.

The Facebook app, which integrates Twitter, is designed to offer an experience that complements television viewing by providing value-added information about the show. As viewers enjoy the show, a message appears on the screen inviting the audience to sign on to Facebook and Twitter. Each segment in turn features a banner with a question or an interesting fact or anecdote about specific scenes, allowing viewers who are not participating via social networks to understand the context and messages that follow. An average of two to four messages posted by social network users are published on the air during each episode.

During the broadcast of Say Yes to the Dress on Discovery Home & Health in Latin America, the audience had the opportunity to contact the channel via social media and consult with its fashion experts not only about the show's on-air content but also about other topics that interested them, such as the best dress for different body types and wedding planning tips. Discovery Home & Health also offered practical advice regarding these topics. Based on the success of the initial launch, the company hopes to replicate the experience in the near future across its channel portfolio internationally.
