Nickelodeon Auctions Celebrity-Designed Backpacks for Children’s Defense Fund

To celebrate 10 years of “Dora the Explorer,” Nickelodeon is auctioning off 12 custom backpacks to support the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF). The celebrity-designed backpacks will be available for auction online until September 2 as a part of the network’s ongoing pro-social campaign “Beyond the Backpack,” and are currently on display at Macy’s Herald Square in New York City. The auction is a part of the network’s ongoing pro-social campaign, “Beyond the Backpack,” and will run through September 2 online at  www.charitybuzz.com/auctions/dora.

The backpacks were personally designed and signed for authenticity by celebrities including Jessica Alba, Drew Brees, Sheryl Crow, Faith Hill, LeBron James, Heidi Klum, John Leguizamo, Eva Longoria Parker, Salma Hayek Pinault, Shakira, Slash, and Matthew McConaughey with girlfriend Camilla Alves. The backpacks are stylistically diverse, with distinct Dora-inspired design elements.

The proceeds from each backpack's auction will benefit CDF, one of "Beyond the Backpack's" Advisory Committee members, which will be funding school readiness programs. There is also a limited quantity of each backpack available for auction globally, in countries including France, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Canada, Spain, The Netherlands, Greece, Australia, New Zealand and Israel.  International proceeds will fund various childhood education projects in each respective country.

The mission of "Beyond the Backpack" is to bring attention to the emotional, physical, experiential and actual competencies that preschoolers need for the first steps into school, including: social skills and emotional intelligence; early literacy and math skills; in-school involvement and resources like school supplies; and health and wellness basics.  The campaign includes dedicated PSAs; a Web site with customized resources and learning activities including a curriculum-focused checklist for parents to find out if their child is ready for kindergarten, links to partner organizations and downloadable content for parents; financial resources and grants; fundraising activities; and community events.

CDF is a nonprofit, child advocacy organization that champions policies and programs that lift children out of poverty; protect them from abuse and neglect; and ensure their access to health care and quality education. For more information, visit the “Beyond the Backpack” Web site.
