Enhance Your Skills and Network in Florida for Free!

ACC wants to send you to sunny Florida to network and sharpen your communications skills at The Florida Cable Connection! We will provide a registration scholarship (valued at $100 each) for up to 30 ACC members to attend the Thursday, June 18, 2009, conference events and for an additional $25, ACC members can also register to attend sessions the next day. Scholarships recipients will be responsible for their own travel expenses.

ACC will host the session "Web 2.0 Today," an educational panel that explores the social media landscape and examines ways that you can advance the cable industry online. NCTA’s Paul Rodriguez and Mike Turk, founders of CableTechTalk.com, cable’s blog on technology, will lead the panel.

The Florida Cable Connection will take place June 18-19, 2009, at the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne. HBO Launches Multi-Platform Alzheimer’s Education Campaign

HBO’s “The Alzheimer’s Project” multiplatform educational campaign launched this week. The campaign is built around a four-part documentary series, executive produced by California’s First Lady Maria Shriver and in partnership with the National Institute on Aging, that examines the scientific and emotional sides of the disease. The campaign utilizes HBO’s online and television presence in community and web based outreach efforts.

The network opened up its signal to all cable subscribers during the premiere of the documentary on May 10-11 and continues to provide easy access to the program by posting it on their YouTube channel. HBO has also made the documentary available for public screening and provides discussion guides and promotional tools to accompany the films. Schools, libraries and civic clubs across the nation will also receive free access when the network distributes more than 5,000 DVDs this month.

Additionally, HBO has utilized their Web site to host a site dedicated to “The Alzheimer’s Project.” The site provides access to the documentary as well as information on the disease and opportunities to get involved with awareness efforts and memorialize loved ones who have been affected by Alzheimer’s through a Facebook page Tribute Wall. The Facebook page features a revolving screen of images posted by users who wish to pay tribute to loved ones impacted by the disease and allows visitors to read their stories. A companion book to the project, “The Alzheimer’s Project: Momentum in Science,” is available as well and covers the science and stories behind the disease.

Judge the 2009 Beacon Awards!

You’ve shipped off your 2009 Beacon Award entries, but that doesn’t mean your involvement with the Beacon Awards has to be over till the fall ceremony. Get a head start on next year’s campaigns with an insider’s look at the industry’s latest innovative communications and public affairs campaigns as a 2009 Beacon Awards judge!

As a Beacon Award judge, you will learn what your cable communications peers across the country are accomplishing and will walk away from the experience with hundreds of new ideas. “I was amazed at all the wonderful programs and projects that took place all around the industry,” Reinaldo Llano, director of corporate community relations for Bright House Networks, said in a Beacon Awards blog post on his first judging experience. “But more than anything, I was excited because I was picking up some great tips from being a judge on how to prepare my entry, since I clearly was going to submit a Beacon entry for programs I managed within my first year with the company.” Llano went on to win a Beacon Award for the campaign he improved with lessons learned from judging.

It’s easier than ever to judge the Beacon Awards and no travel is required. If you volunteer to judge the preliminary round, ACC will ship several entries to you to review anytime, anywhere during a two-week judging period in July.

Comcast Supports Hispanic Leadership Organization

Comcast was one of the lead sponsors for the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute’s (CHLI) 5th Annual Gala and Leadership Awards on May 13 in Washington, D.C.

“Comcast is very pleased to support the congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute and the important work CHLI does in advancing the U.S. Hispanic community,” Susan Gonzales, senior director, external affairs for Comcast, said in a statement.

CHLI honored U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) with the 2009 Leadership in Public Service Award for his career in public service and exemplary leadership on behalf of the U.S. Hispanic community. Former President of Spain José Maria Aznar was also honored with the 2009 Leadership in International Relations Award for his accomplishments during his time in office and as Chairman of the Foundation for Social Studies and Analysis.

Congratulations Jeff Cusson!

ACC member Jeff Cusson has been honored in Multichannel News’ “40 under 40” special report. Every year, the publication recognizes innovative young executives that are advancing their company and the industry. This year, Cusson, senior vice president of corporate affairs for HBO, was among the honorees.

Cusson has been with HBO since 2000 and oversees the network’s consumer-relations efforts as well as trade and business media relations. He is also responsible for communications dealing with digital innovations and the network’s international, domestic, and sales practices.

Unlock the Secrets of Social Media and Internal Communications with Upcoming ACC Webinars and Chats!

ACC tackles external and internal communications in the next two months’ online educational offerings. From the nitty gritty elements of writing great Twitter copy to launching a successful intranet system, this summer’s webinars and chats are tackling some of the hottest topics in industry communications.

Communicating Cable’s Story with Social Media,” ACC’s June 17 online chat, explores the ways social media is changing how and where people communicate. All across the nation, cable communicators are tapping into the power of the medium to tell the cable industry’s story and accomplish business goals in areas such as issues management, community relations and promotion. How can Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, or blogs advance cable online?

ACC has lined up four innovators in cable’s use of social media to discuss how they are tapping into Web 2.0 and give you ideas where you can improve your efforts or start using this powerful tool. Susan Anable, director of public affairs for Cox Communications; Christopher Berry, public relations and Internet communications manager for Bright House Networks; Shauna Causey, public relations manager for Comcast; and Nora Ellish, director, media relations for NBC Universal TV Networks Distribution will answer questions on harnessing social media to advance the industry.

In ACC’s July 15 Webinar, “How ESPN Built a Stellar Internal Communications Team and Intranet in Less Than a Year,” ESPN’s Chris LaPlaca, senior vice president of corporate communications, and John McCloskey, senior director of internal communications, will reveal how they built a strong Intranet in such short time and provide tips on how you can improve your company’s internal communications efforts. The July 15 Webinar begins at 1 pm EDT. Only ACC members may attend this webinar, and it is free of charge as a benefit of ACC membership. FORUM 2009 Survey Results Released!

Recently, ACC members received a survey concerning FORUM 2009, October 26-28 in Denver, CO. The results of the survey are being used by the FORUM Committee for planning this year's program to meet the professional needs and interests of ACC members.

Key findings from the survey are:

  • 53% of members either agree or strongly agree they will attend FORUM 2009
  • For those not planning to attend, 39% reported no budget for travel as well as 29% reporting no budget for registration fees
  • In addition to members planning to attend FORUM 2009, a number also reported they plan to attend other events during Cable Connection-Fall: 28% also plan on registering for CTAM’s The Summit, 13% also plan on registering for the Kaitz Foundation’s Annual Dinner, 10% also plan on registering for NAMIC’s Annual Conference.

Finally, far and away the most popular session topic for FORUM 2009 is the use of Social Media & Cable Communications.  This topic was selected by over 52% of respondents, 20 points higher than the next highest response.
