The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) announced that Comcast will be the official cable television and Video-On-Demand (VOD) provider for its 2008 Convention, held August 25-28 in Denver. The DNCC also announced that Comcast will produce simultaneous, online streaming coverage of the Convention in Spanish, a Convention first, at www.DemConvention.com.
Comcast will place highlights, including key speeches and Spanish-language content from each night of the Convention on its national VOD platform and will make the content available for distribution on other cable systems throughout the nation. The MSO will also edit, manage and archive Convention coverage for distribution online, on cable television and via global satellite uplink.
The cable industry is committed to improving the communities it serves, and its active involvement locally can be a competitive advantage. ACC is hosting an online chat entitled “Partnering Your Way to Fabulous Public Affairs Events” on Thursday, July 10 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Eastern time. It will explore how to design an effective, community relations event and how partnerships, particularly those between programmers and operators, can magnify its results.
Confirmed experts participating include Kim Gilmore, Ph.D., historian and director, corporate outreach, A&E Television Networks/History; Kristen Roberts, regional senior director, community and public relations, Comcast, Connecticut-West Region; and Ann Shrewsbury, director of public affairs & community programming, Time Warner Cable - National.

Music Choice, the multiplatform music service, has partnered with Rock the Vote to launch “Live Your Vote,” a campaign focused on driving youth voter registration and encouraging young people’s involvement in important social issues. The initiative, targeting the network’s young adult audience, will feature public service advertisements (PSAs) with Alicia Keys, 50 Cent, Ashlee Simpson and Three Doors Down, among others, promoting the power of voting and getting involved. The spots will run on Music Choice’s On Demand network.
Banner ads will also appear on targeted Music Choice channels and the network’s broadband music service as a part of the multi-platform campaign. Music Choice will also be producing “Live Your Vote” content, featuring themed music videos, hosted video playlists and originals that will air on its free on-demand network and broadband music service in September.
Music Choice and its partners will develop Spanish-language versions of the PSAs and a Hispanic-focused original program to reach and appeal to the Hispanic youth population. Time Warner Cable’s New York City Region has also partnered with Music Choice to promote awareness of the campaign to its 1.4 million subscribers with a 30-second community message encouraging viewers to visit Rock The Vote’s Web site, www.rockthevote.com.
ACC will present panels at two regional cable meetings this summer to discuss the latest developments on how cable, broadcast and others are supporting the transition to all digital broadcast television slated for February 17, 2009. The sessions, titled “Update on the Digital Transition: Eight Months and Counting,” will explore what cable professionals need to know and do to make sure employees, current customers and potential new customers are ready for the transition.
The first panel will be Friday, July 18 from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at the New England Cable Telecommunications Association (NECTA) annual meeting in Newport, RI, at the Newport Marriott. The panel will be moderated by Steve Jones, executive director, ACC, and will also include: Trevor Arp, director of video products and content, Comcast, NorthCentral Division; Lisa Churchville, president, NBC10/WJAR-TV; and Steve Effros, president, Effros Communications. NECTA encourages any ACC member who is interested in attending this session but not registered for the annual meeting to attend the session free of charge. Comcast and The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars announced the recipients of the Comcast Diversity Congressional Scholarship award. Seven college students participating in the Washington Center’s Congressional Leadership Program have each been awarded $5,000 scholarships to support part-time summer internships in the offices of congressional leaders.
The Comcast Diversity Congressional Scholarships are awarded to select undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds who are attending Historically Black Colleges & Universities located in Maryland and pursing careers in politics. Along with the monetary stipend, winners will receive academic credit and an internship in the offices of U.S. Senators and House Representatives, congressional committees and subcommittees and legislators or legislative groups working closely with congressional offices.

To kick off the July 4th week and honor America’s servicemen and women and their families, the cast of Lifetime Television’s drama “Army Wives” is inviting current army wives and military servicemembers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center to a red carpet event and the advance premiere of an upcoming episode on Tuesday, July 1st.
Attendees will include select cast members of the show, senior military representatives, actual army wives and their families, representatives from military aid organizations and Tanya Biank, author of Army Wives, the book that inspired the show. Biank will be doing a book signing at the event and the cast members and servicemen’s wives will be available for photos and interviews. The National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) estimates that CableCares initiatives raised more than $900,000 in cash, equipment and in-kind donations for greater New Orleans during The Cable Show ’08. More than 60 cable industry companies, organizations, and associations contributed resources to CableCares. Outdoor Channel also announced that it raised $10,000 for Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO) as a result of Cable Show attendees’ participation in the “This Land is Your Land Challenge.” For every visitor to the network’s booth who attempted to reel in a bass or snag a buck on the arcade games Bass Simulator and Big Buck Hunter, Outdoor Channel donated $25 to ARNO.
