MTV Hosts Democratic Candidates for Forum on Veterans' Issues

MTV's Choose or Lose and The Associated Press collaborated last night in Pennsylvania to host "Choose or Lose Presents Clinton & Obama Answer Young Veterans," a discussion about the Iraq war featuring the two Democratic presidential candidates, Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, as well as eight Iraqi war veterans.

The hour-long special aired on MTV, mtvU, MTV2, MTV Tr3s, MTV Hits and MTV James, and was also streamed across 1,800 sites of the AP's Online Video Network. The commercial-free forum was part of an ongoing effort by Choose or Lose to mobilize 18- to 30-year-olds to vote in this year's primaries and general election.

The candidates heard the veterans' personal stories of their tours of duty and answered questions about how they plan to lead the country's armed forces and deal with other national-security issues if they are elected. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Senator John McCain, was invited to participate in the forum but was unable to because of scheduling issues. For more information about the event and to read the veterans' profiles and blogs about their experiences, go to www.Think.MTV.com.

ACC Announces Winners of the 5th Annual Cable Communications Achievement Award

The Association of Cable Communicators (ACC) announced the winners of the Cable Communications Achievement Award are William "Bill" Jasso, vice president, government and media relations, Time Warner Cable – NE Ohio (Akron); Sharon Kleinpeter, vice president, governmental and public affairs, Cox Communications, Inc. (Louisiana); and "Rising Star" winner, Reinaldo Llano, director, corporate community relations, Bright House Networks.

The Cable Communications Achievement Award recognizes individuals for their outstanding contributions within cable communications and to ACC. The awards will be presented at The Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., on Monday, March 31 during ACC's FORUM 2008 conference.

For nearly 35 years, Bill Jasso has been working in the field of public relations and developing and perfecting his skills as a powerful communicator. In addition to being a superb communicator, he is a relationship builder.  His proactive outreach to local town, city and county officials has helped Time Warner Cable to maintain positive relationships with local officials. The prospect of Ohio's Department of Commerce taking over franchising in 2007 sent many of the 472 local communities into panic mode. His strategic efforts to communicate the realities, myths and long-term benefits of State Issued Franchising involved a campaign to reach out to 3,250 local officials within the division's footprint. These efforts enabled Time Warner Cable to maintain its good relationships with these officials and kept media coverage to a minimum, although many discussions took place with media outlets.

Jasso currently Co-chairs ACC's Provide Professional Development and Recognition Committee. In this capacity his leadership and direction have been instrumental in a number of association activities including the June 2008 4th annual Cable Communications Institute held in conjunction with Syracuse University and the publishing of the ACC Communications Handbook. He also won a Beacon Award in 2006 for the Road Runner Akron Marathon initiative. Jasso's community involvement includes working with the Akron Police Department, Summit County Sheriff's Office and the Akron Regional Development Board.

One of the most effective individuals for the cable industry in Louisiana is Sharon Kleinpeter of Cox Communications. Her broad and varied background is one of the reasons Kleinpeter is so effective. She began her career as an elementary school teacher, owned and operated a video production company, was an editor and lobbyist at the Police Jury Association of Louisiana, and served as the executive director of the Louisiana Cable Telecommunications Association (LCTA) before beginning her career with Cox Communications.

When Kleinpeter joined Cox Communications eight years ago, the company had just completed its purchase of TCI's Baton Rouge region. She took on the job of building a positive image for the Cox brand.  She succeeded by raising the expectations of her customers and the service they should receive via the "You ask, we deliver" campaign. This campaign touted the investments Cox was making in infrastructure and in its employees and succeeded by building a strong bond between Cox and its customers.  While implementing a new branding and community campaign, Kleinpeter struck a strategic and marquis partnership with Louisiana State University through a ten year, $10 million agreement. Following the success of this program, she then created similar agreements with Southern University and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Klienpeter is an ambassador for the cable industry, a mentor to young women and a well-respected professional who is admired throughout the community, state and cable industry.

Reinaldo Llano joined Bright House Networks Florida Group Office in November 2004 and was promoted to director in December 2006. Since joining Bright House, he has been instrumental in shaping community relations strategies and tactics for the corporate office by enhancing and building key national tactical initiatives such as Bright House Networks Star Teacher Awards and the Bright Kids Network—a recent investment of $1 million dollars to support afterschool programs. He has developed robust industry relationships resulting in strong involvement from programming networks with Bright House-led initiatives. Llano also provides guidance to Bright House Networks divisions on applying industry best practices in community relations, and developing programs based on research.

Llano also believes in giving back to his community. He currently serves on the board for the Afterschool Alliance, a national advocacy group for afterschool programs; the CTAM Florida Chapter; the National Association of Multi-Ethnics in Communications; and presently serves as the Secretary and Board Development Chair for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. Llano is also the Co-chair of the 2008 FORUM Committee for ACC.
