Bresnan Announces New Project to Boost Montana Small Businesses
Bresnan Communications announced the launch of a unique partnership to help would-be Montana entrepreneurs turn their business ideas into reality and enable a greater number of small businesses to succeed in the state. The partnership, called the Bresnan Business Incubator, includes a $2.1 million commitment from Bresnan in the form of public service announcements (PSAs) and grants to participating businesses.
The goal of the partnership is to raise awareness among the state's entrepreneurs of the services offered by Montana's regional Small Business Development Centers (SBDC). Additionally, through various grants from Bresnan and other forms of assistance, the program aims to help more of Montana's aspiring entrepreneurs and existing small businesses succeed in today's competitive business environment.
The PSAs created by Bresnan will direct interested entrepreneurs to a Web site offering full details about the program plus information about assistance available at the regional SBDC offices. On the Web site, entrepreneurs will be able to fill out a short online questionnaire detailing their business ideas. The questionnaires will be forwarded automatically to the nearest SBDC office, where staff will begin the advisory process, evaluating each proposal and recommending appropriate candidates for the Incubator. Initially, up to ten businesses per region will be chosen to take part in the program.
In addition to the PSAs, Bresnan will match the cable advertising budget of each eligible business dollar-for-dollar for up to $10,000 with an advertising grant. The cable company's production staff will also assist in developing advertising strategies for eligible businesses and will produce television commercial spots at no cost. Animal Planet Announces Launch of Online Disaster Preparedness Kit
Animal Planet's Petfinder.com has created the Petfinder.com Disaster Preparedness Kit, a powerful tool designed to empower families all over the country with the resources and information they need to protect themselves and their pets in the event of a natural disaster. The kit includes a tip sheet highlighting simple preventive measures to implement at home, a check list with critical items to have on-hand as well as suggestions of how to put together an appropriate preparedness plan that can be adapted to different lifestyles.
Petfinder.com is a free, online, searchable database of animals that need permanent homes. The organization's technology provides a wealth of knowledge about how to select the most compatible pet for your home and how to raise and care for an animal. It also includes information on the Petfinder.com Emergency Response Network, an interactive listing of displaced pets in past disasters. The Network was responsible for reuniting over 2,000 pets and owners in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
In conjunction with the online kit, the Petfinder.com Foundation announced a grant program to provide funds to the Petfinder animal shelter and rescue group members to assist them in becoming disaster ready. The grant will provide shelters and rescue groups the funds necessary to purchase equipment or obtain training in order to be prepared to handle the pets in their care and serve as a resource in their communities. Comcast Kicks Off School Supplies Drive in Metro Washington, DC, Area
Comcast recently began its Fifth Annual Comcast School Supplies Drive to help Metro Washington, DC, students obtain the learning tools needed to jump start a successful school year. The annual drive offers employees the chance to support the education and well-being of local scholars through the donation of much needed school supplies.
The program runs through August 10 and aims to gather book bags, crayons, notebooks and more for use by area students. The collected materials will be divided among the following non-profit organizations: District of Columbia Public Schools, Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County, Prince George's County Department of Social Services and the Boys & Girls Club of Frederick, Md.
Comcast employees have donated more than 11,000 back-to-school materials to support area youth affiliated with local non-profits since the project began. Military Channel Connects with Communities Through PSA Campaign
The Military Channel announced that it would be launching a new phase of the Reconnect America initiative with a series of public service announcements (PSAs) featuring congressmen and governors acknowledging American troops and their families. The PSA campaign encourages viewers to show their support for the military community by visiting ReconnectAmerica.com. Reconnect America is a nationwide program uniting 50 million Military Channel viewers with more than 10 million Americans in military-focused organizations that offer resources to support the troops.
In addition to pledging $3 million of air time to the initiative, the Military Channel is partnering with Comcast and other distributors to air the PSAs locally. The spots will also air on www.ReconnectAmerica.com. Appearing on behalf of the Military Channel, the PSAs feature several United States congressman and governors thanking the men and women of the armed forces for their service and sharing with viewers how they can help fellow Americans by visiting ReconnectAmerica.com. The first of the PSAs began airing nationally on the July 4th holiday and featured Governor Edward Rendell of Pennsylvania and Freshman Congressman Patrick Murphy, an Iraq war veteran also from Pennsylvania. PSAs for PointSmart.ClickSafe. Now Available
In conjunction with NCTA and Cable in the Classroom's PointSmart.ClickSafe. initiative, public service announcements for the campaign were completed and sent via satellite uplink this past week. The new PSAs are shorter versions of the popular videos on the initiative's consumer-oriented Web site and serve to illustrate important information about how parents can help keep their children safe online. Each of the spots ends with a call to visit the Web site, that provides a variety of materials offering parents and families simple instructions, tips and scenarios that can help them develop a strategy to manage Internet use.
A total of 24 spots were produced in a wide variety of lengths including a 30 second generic version, a 25 second version for customization and 15 and 10 second versions, available in both standard and high definition. The PSAs were produced by Pinnacle Advertising of Los Angeles to help the industry fulfill the pledge made in conjunction with "Cable's Online Safety Code of Conduct." The Code was adopted as part of the initiative to assist consumers in creating a safer online media environment by fostering a better understanding of the digital media landscape.

Lifetime Launches Production on Public Service Campaign
In conjunction with its 13th, annual, award-winning "Stop Breast Cancer for Life" initiative, Lifetime Television is teaming up with several celebrities to launch the "Be My Support, Be My Strength, Be My Bra" public service campaign. Celebrities such as Whoopi Goldberg, Fran Drescher and Daisy Fuentes have all agreed to take part in a video and photography shoot with breast cancer survivors and advocates to air on Lifetime during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
The new campaign is a playful but forceful call to action to promote breast health and breast cancer awareness, based on the slang term for friend, 'bra.' An array of women and men impacted by breast cancer are all posing with their 'bras,' the person or people who, for example, urged them to use the tools of breast cancer detection, attended every doctor appointment with them or gave them hope through treatment. The network believes that the campaign will encourage more men and women to become part of a support system.
In addition to the on-air PSAs, the campaign will be infused into all elements and multi-media platforms of the network's 2007 "Stop Breast Cancer for Life" initiative, including LifetimeTV.com, video-on-demand, printed educational materials, point of purchase displays and community events.
