Register Now for ACC's Media Training Workshop!
ACC will host a media and spokesperson training session on July 18 from 10:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Newport Marriott Hotel in Newport, R.I., prior to the New England Cable & Telecommunications Association (NECTA) 2007 Annual Convention & Exhibition. Taught by Margie Elsberg, president of Elsberg Associates and a 25-year veteran of the Washington press corp as well as a corporate media trainer since 1990, the session is designed to provide the "dos" and "don'ts" for what every spokesman, spokeswoman or company executive should know.
Training will include media tips and techniques to deliver messages effectively and powerfully. Instruction will cover situations such as media interviews, press conferences, town hall meetings, testimony and presentations. Participants will learn what they need to have front and center before, during and after they are on camera with local media outlets or for national consumption. Every participant will also have an opportunity for an on-camera exercise and follow-up critique.
The workshop is targeted to every level of experience and expertise and is suitable for every type of market. The registration fee is $125 and includes a working lunch. Cox Communications Partners to Support New Orleans Tourism
Cox Communications has joined together with ten other cable television operators and the nation's largest interconnect, Adlink, to help the City of New Orleans rebound from the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina. Bresnan Communications, Bright House Networks, Cable ONE, Cablevision, Charter Communications, Comcast, Insight, Mediacom, Suddenlink and Time Warner Cable have all signed on to join Cox Communications and Adlink in a commitment for at least $12 million in combined, donated advertising time on their networks in an effort to bring tourists and revenue back to New Orleans.
The cable companies are currently running award-winning spots developed by the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation (NOTMC) and its advertising agency Peter A. Mayer Advertising. The campaign features well-known celebrities with connections to New Orleans inviting viewers to "come fall in love with New Orleans all over again." Spokespersons such as Wynton Marsalis, Emeril Lagasse, Patricia Clarkson, Dan Akroyd, John Goodman, George Rodrigue, Dr. John, and others share what they love about New Orleans, encouraging viewers to "come for the music, come for the food, come for the romance, come for the history, come for the art, come for the culture and come for the fun." A call to action drives viewers to www.NewOrleansOnline.com to view hotel package rates and make trip reservations.
Tourism is vital to New Orleans and Louisiana as a whole, and visitors to New Orleans often venture out to tour the larger region. For this reason, the spots run by cable operators will also be tagged with www.Louisianatravel.com, the state's Web site developed to help tourists enjoy the rich history and culture that is unique to Louisiana. The spots have been running for the past month and the donated advertising time is estimated to yield $1.3 billion in visitor spending to New Orleans and surrounding areas. Food Network Launches Campaign Against Hunger
The Food Network launched the first national public affairs campaign in the channel's history last week by signing a multi-year partnership with Share Our Strength, a non-profit organization devoted to ending childhood hunger in America.
The cable network will help raise funds for the charity, as well as produce public service announcements to publicize the work of Share Our Strength. The first event the network will support through the partnership is Share Our Strength's Great American Bake Sale on May 19. The national campaign prompts individuals and community groups to hold local bake sales and donate the proceeds to hunger charities, with a focus this year on healthy options families can prepare together. The Food Network will also run PSAs on the effort featuring network celebrities Rachael Ray, Sandra Lee and Tyler Florence. Viewers who hold bake sales on behalf of the network will have the opportunity to compete to win a trip for two to New York to see a taping of "Emeril Live!" and get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Food Network kitchens.
Local cable affiliates are also joining the Food Network in its commitment to end hunger through contributions to local charities with a similar focus. Cox Communications' Las Vegas system donated $10,000 to Chefs for Kids to support the group's goal of eliminating malnutrition and hunger through education and awareness. Chef for Kids is a local charity in Clark County, Nevada that reaches 20,000 elementary school children in at-risk areas through its thirty minute weekly nutrition lessons.
Food Network will support other ongoing Share Our Strength initiatives throughout the coming months, such as Taste of the Nation, Operation Frontline and Hinges of Hope Tours. The network also plans to create fundraising events in New York City and elsewhere throughout the country in an effort to gather more partners and advertisers.
Share Our Strength has raised $200 million for its anti-hunger mission since its founding in 1984. The organization distributes funds via a network of 1,000 hunger related charities throughout the United States. For more information on Share Our Strength, visit http://www.strength.org.

The History Channel Announces Take a Vet to School Day
The History Channel announced last week that it would be launching a multi-tiered outreach initiative designed to link veterans of all ages with young people in schools and communities across America. "Take a Vet to School Day" was premiered on Monday, May 7 at a kickoff event hosted by Cox Communications, Las Vegas at Steven G. Schorr Elementary School to coincide with The Cable Show. The event will run from mid-October until Veterans Day, November 12, 2007.
The "Take a Vet to School Day" national and grassroots campaign has enlisted R. Lee Ermey, ex-Marine drill sergeant and acclaimed actor and host of "Mail Call" on The History Channel, to serve as spokesperson for the campaign. Customized public service announcements (PSAs) featuring Ermey shown on local MSO systems will encourage schools and communities to invite local veterans to speak in grades K-12 classrooms and share their stories with students. The History Channel will provide participating schools with curriculum-based educational materials as well as a Veterans Day video produced with the Department of Education.
A second part of the initiative includes a call for action to citizens, encouraging them to support veterans from all wars by donating to not-for-profit organizations that provide medical care, counseling and aid to families of veterans. The public can do so by visiting http://www.veterans.com, the official site for the initiative and a portal to several different not-for-profit organizations, including the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, Fisher House Foundation, the VFW Unmet Needs Program, Armed Forces Foundation, the Armed Services YMCA and others. The History Channel will also donate a total of $50,000 among these organizations as part of its commitment.
Get Connected to ACC by Volunteering
Are you interested in getting connected to ACC in a fresh way? Do you have some great ideas for FORUM 2008 panelists or a Beacon Awards® master of ceremonies? Each year, ACC asks its members to volunteer to serve on its various committees. Committee members assist the association in meeting its goals and planning activities that help members to get connected to one another and to industry partners. A description of each committee along with the co-chairs for 2007-2008 is below.
Provide Professional Development Resources and Recognition Committee
As one of the three committees that exists to advise the ACC Board of Directors on a number of association issues, the focus of this committee is to provide superior professional development opportunities for all members, recognize and celebrate excellence in public affairs at all levels and serve all cable communication professionals. Co-chairs for 2007-2008 are Andrea Bernstein, senior vice president, Oxygen Media and Bill Jasso, vice president, government and media relations, Time Warner Cable Northeast Ohio.
Enhance the Role and Value of Industry Communications
Another committee created to advise the Board of Directors, this group's purpose is to communicate the role and value of ACC to all members and the industry, work with other organizations on initiatives that benefit members and the industry, develop the organizational competencies and resources needed to support achievement of the association's mission, and engage members in association leadership as well as increase their participation in available programs and services. Co-chairs are Rosa Gatti, senior vice president, corporate communications and outreach, ESPN, Inc. and Jim Maiella, vice president of media relations, cable and communications, Cablevision Systems Corporation.
Create Outreach Activities that Enhance the Membership Experience
The third board committee, this group focuses on building and strengthening membership through local and regional events, creating a mentoring program to promote career and personal development, building a market environment for increased public acceptance and use of the industry's products and services, and integrating social goals and their accomplishments with industry and company business goals. Co-chairs are Anthony Surratt, executive director, public relations, Cox Communications, Inc. and Lee Tenebruso.
FORUM 2008 Committee
The FORUM Committee is responsible for working with the FORUM co-chairs to build on the success of previous conferences and assist staff in planning sessions and workshops that are topical and representative of communications and public affairs throughout the cable industry. The co-chairs for this committee are Misty Skedgell, vice president of corporate communications, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. and Brian Wirth, vice president, government and public affairs, Time Warner Cable.
2008 Beacon Awards® Committee
The Beacon Awards honor excellence in cable communications and public affairs. This committee works with the co-chairs to plan the annual awards program, looking at everything from the judging process to the ceremony itself. The co-chair for this committee is Ellen Kroner, senior vice president, corporate communications and marketing, Rainbow Media Holdings, Inc. A second co-chair has not yet been named.

Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership Receives $10 Million Grant
Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership (DCGEP) and The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation (TCCAF) announced a new partnership dedicated to increasing educational opportunities for children and communities across Africa. The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation has granted DCGEP $10 million over five years to fund the expansion of the organization's future education projects in underserved communities on the continent.
The Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership has a proven track record of establishing sustainable community information hubs, called Learning Centers, in underserved schools. The organization's implementation strategy includes providing schools with a television and a DVD/VCR player as well as a library of culturally relevant programs produced by DCGEP in the appropriate language. The $10 million grant from TCCAF will expand DCGEP's reach in Angola, Namibia, South Africa and Uganda, and bring DCGEP's Learning Center project for the first time to Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Morocco.
Over the past ten years, DCGEP has established 194 Learning Centers in 10 countries around the world. Each Learning Center is provided with three years of training and technical support from local DCGEP staff, ensuring that each center has the potential for success and long-term sustainability. Ninety-five percent of Learning Centers continue to sustain the project on their own after the three year period. Together, TCCAF and DCGEP will bring educational resources and teacher training to nearly 70 additional schools in the countries it serves, bringing the number of students reached to nearly one million by 2012.
The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation was founded in 2001 and invests in four priority areas to encourage sustainable development in Africa: health, water, entrepreneurship and education. TCCAF partners with communities, NGOs, governments and corporations to deliver an integrated response to Africa's challenges. The Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership was founded by Discovery Communications in 1997 as an effort to bring partners from the private and public sectors together

AETN Honored at The White House for Save Our History Campaign
Congratulations to ACC corporate member A&E Television Networks for receiving a 2007 Preserve America Presidential Award for The History Channel's "Save Our History" campaign. The award was presented to the network by First Lady Laura Bush last week during a ceremony in The White House Rose Garden.
"Save Our History" is The History Channel's national, strategic philanthropy initiative established in 1998 to support community historic preservation efforts, promote heritage tourism, and enhance history education. Through its grant program, history organizations collaborate with public school students, teachers, and local officials to support local preservation efforts and education. In its first three years, "Save Our History" received more than 1,500 grant applications from every state and Washington, D.C., and awarded grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.
The Presidential Awards are one component of Preserve America, a White House initiative that highlights the efforts of President and Mrs. Bush to celebrate and preserve our nation's cultural heritage assets. The Preserve America Presidential Awards are given to organizations, businesses, government entities and individuals for exemplary accomplishments in the sustainable use and preservation of cultural or natural heritage assets; demonstrated commitment to the protection and interpretation of America's cultural or natural heritage assets; and the integration of these assets into contemporary community life as well as the combination of innovative, creative, and responsible approaches to showcasing historic resources in communities.
Recipients of the Preserve America Presidential Awards are chosen through a national competition administered by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) in cooperation with the Executive Office of the President and in partnership with the U.S. Department of the Interior. ACC Conducts Community Contributions Survey
Two years ago, ACC conducted the 2004 Community Contributions survey that compiled the cable industry's contributions to local communities. Developed to demonstrate the positive contributions cable operators and programmers make in their communities, the survey outcomes are used to educate policy makers, the press and the general public about the significant investment the cable industry makes in communities across the country. The final figure totaled $1.36 billion in community contributions by the cable television industry for the calendar year 2004.
Now, in 2007, ACC will again survey the industry to compile its contributions to local communities during the calendar year 2006. here! Networks announced that it would begin a national cause-marketing initiative July 9th called "Change Starts here!" The new initiative will support national and local charitable organizations, with charter members including Cable Positive, Framelin, Outfest, Aid for AIDS in Nevada (AFAN), the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association.
For each new subscriber to the channel, here! Networks will donate $10 to a participating "Change Starts here!" organization as designated by the new customer. Customers need to provide their cable bill showing here! Networks added to their lineup and select one of the non-profit partners to participate in the "Change Starts here!" initiative. Congratulations, Time Warner Cable-Waco Division!
Congratulations to Time Warner Cable's Waco Division for receiving a Golden Apple Award at the Waco ISD Partners in Education banquet earlier this month. Time Warner Cable received the award with its partner, Waco's G.W. Carver Academy, for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) Superstars PSA project. The project educated students on careers in media, telecommunications and advertising, while empowering them against their TAKS test fears. Students wrote, directed and
starred in their own public service announcements that also included a special message from a local legislator. The PSAs were then broadcast throughout the Central Texas area in the month prior to the statewide TAKS tests.
