 Nominate a Colleague for the Public Affairs Achievement Award
Is there a cable public affairs executive whom you have admired and believe should be recognized by the industry? If so, nominate him or her for the Public Affairs Achievement Award. Presented annually during FORUM, the award recognizes and honors individual members for their outstanding contributions to cable public affairs in the categories of community relations, government relations, media relations or local programming. The 2005 winners were Rosa Gatti, ESPN, Inc. for media relations, Bonnie Hathaway, Time Warner Cable, for community relations and Ivan Johnson, Cox Communications, for government relations. The nomination deadline for the third annual Public Affairs Achievement Award is January 3, 2006.

The eligibility requirements are:

  • Current member of CTPAA
  • Member of CTPAA for a minimum of three (3) years
  • Worked in public affairs a minimum of five (5) years
  • Supports the goals of the CTPAA
  • Employed by a MSO, Local Cable System, Cable Network, Industry Supplier, or Industry Nonprofit Organization
  • Individuals are eligible to receive the award once for each of the four categories.

The 2006 Public Affairs Achievement Awards will be presented during FORUM 2006, March 19-22, 2006, at the JW Marriott Hotel in Washington, DC. For information on how to nominate someone or to obtain a nomination form, please go to the membership page of the CTPAA Web site.

 Holiday Concert to Raise Money for Pancreatic Cancer Research
Cablevision, Rainbow Media and Madison Square Garden are celebrating the holiday season and raising money for The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research by presenting the Holiday Rock & Roll Bash V. This annual event is the foundation's most important fundraiser and will take place Dec. 8 at the B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in New York City. Entertainment for the evening will include the music of JD and The Straight Shot, led by Cablevision President & CEO Jim Dolan, as well as an appearance by the Radio City Rockettes.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the foundation. Named after Cablevision's late vice chairman, Marc Lustgarten, the foundation is dedicated to advancing scientific and medical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of pancreatic cancer.  CTPAA Briefs Present Cable's View on Debate Over Indecency and A La Carte
This week the Senate Commerce Committee held an "Open Forum on Decency" that focused on a number of issues with potential impact on the cable industry. Two topics, "A la Carte" and "Indecency" in television content, were a constant theme during the forum. CTPAA has published "Briefs" that outline the cable industry's positions on both subjects. The publications are written in a format that is extremely easy for anyone to understand. They may be downloaded from the CTPAA Web site.  Please feel free to circulate them within your company as well as to opinion leaders, friends and others interested in learning more about the cable industry's point of view on these important issues.  Animal Planet Campaign Encourages Consumers to Be a Hero
Animal Planet will kick off the second year of its "Be A Hero" campaign in January and will add new components to encourage viewers to take an active role in the welfare of animals in their communities. Animal Planet will reach out to cable system affiliates to partner on two initiatives, one to drive local ad sales and one to promote broadband services. The local ad sales tool will include spots and in-store signage encouraging consumers to "be a hero" by patronizing local sponsors that participate in the campaign. For each purchase made as a result of the promotion, Animal Planet will make a donation to a local animal welfare organization or shelter, and the customer will receive an Animal Planet gift. Similarly, a special automotive campaign will ask viewers to be a hero by taking a test drive at participating car dealers to support animal organizations.

Secondly, Animal Planet will help affiliates promote their broadband services by offering an electronic "Animal Planet Healthy Pet Guide," featuring tips on pet care and safety, that cable systems can offer to their high-speed Internet subscribers. The brochure will cover topics such as protecting the long-term health of your pet and administering first aid during an emergency. Other Web resources will include videos, games and a local pet finder. The "Be A Hero" Web site will be linked to participating cable systems' sites, and systems can use the campaign to promote the benefits of their broadband services, such as quick and easy navigating and downloading.  Save $50 - Register for FORUM 2006 by December 31
Register for FORUM 2006 by December 31, 2005, and save $50 on the advance registration rate of $650 and save $150 from the final registration (after March 3, 2006) rate of $750. The theme for FORUM 2006 is "Cable at the Crossroads: Shaping Change in a Competitive World," and it will be held March 19-22, 2006, at the JW Marriott Hotel in Washington, DC. The JW Marriott was also the host hotel for FORUM in 2001.

FORUM 2006 co-chairs are Bret Perkins, vice president of government affairs, Comcast Cable Communications, Inc. and Craig Watson, vice president of communications, Charter Communications Western Division.  MSNBC Partners with the USO to Help Troops Phone Home
MSNBC's "Scarborough Country" has joined the United Service Organizations (USO) to bring deployed service men and women a little closer to home this holiday season by supplying them with international telephone calling cards. Beginning Nov. 28 and running through the holidays, MSNBC will support the USO's Operation Phone Home campaign that delivers calling cards to U.S. troops serving in Southwest Asia and the Persian Gulf region. On his nightly program that airs Monday through Friday at 10 p.m., Joe Scarborough will encourage viewers to make donations to fund the cards and will keep them up-to-date on the campaign progress.

The USO has distributed more than 1 million calling cards since Operation Phone Home began in April 2003. This service is even more vital during the holiday season to boost morale by connecting troops with their loved ones. For more information, visit www.uso.org/joe

 Judge the 2006 Beacon Awards
CTPAA invites its members to choose the best of the best cable public affairs initiatives of the past year by being a 2006 Beacon Awards judge. To volunteer, complete the Beacon judge form and send it to CTPAA. As a Beacon judge, CTPAA members will learn what cable public affairs professionals across the country are accomplishing and will walk away from the experience with dozens of new ideas. The first round of Beacon judging will be all day January 11 and 12 in Washington, D.C., with a welcome reception hosted by NCTA on the evening of January 10.
