CTPAA Establishes Public Affairs Institute
CTPAA is pleased to announce the establishment of the CTPAA Public Affairs Institute, a graduate level program that will educate members on strategic management, communication, and public policy issues facing the cable industry. This three-day, intensive program was designed in close consultation with The George Washington University Graduate School of Political Management (GSPM) and draws from its world-renowned curriculum. The inaugural Institute will take place December 6-8, 2004, in Washington, DC, and will be held annually thereafter. It is specifically designed for mid to senior level public affairs executives who are willing to challenge themselves to develop the enhanced skill sets necessary to meet the challenges of today's competitive marketplace.

"We are constantly striving to help our members excel in their professions, and this partnership with The George Washington University Graduate School of Political Management allows CTPAA to do just that. This unique program brings higher level learning to our members in areas that are specifically dedicated to the jobs and tasks their companies ask them to accomplish," said CTPAA Executive Director Steve Jones.

Change is one of the few constants in today's public affairs environment, and continuous learning is critical to the growth and long-range success of public affairs executives. The CTPAA Public Affairs Institute will educate participants from across the country by focusing on five core areas: strategic issue management, community relations and grassroots politics, media management, effective lobbying principles at all government levels, and maximizing the impact of political contributions.

CTPAA will immediately begin reviewing applications for the December program and has already received a high level of interest from a number of members. Currently the Institute has received applications from executives at Bresnan Communications, CableLabs, Cox Communications, Fox Cable Networks, Fox Sports Net, and Time Warner Cable. Admission is limited to 25 to allow interactive, small group participation.

"This program is all about 'hands-on' and has been specifically designed for cable professionals. Some of the best practitioners in their fields will be leading the classes," said Dr. Steven Billet, chief of staff, GSPM.

As currently designed, each day will explore one or more different management issues through the use of case studies. Integrated with each case will be workshops and group activities that will reflect the GSPM's emphasis on practical policies, instead of theoretical approaches, by providing concrete examples and stimulating discussion. Participants in the Institute will leave with enhanced practical skills completely transferable to their daily work.

Members interested in applying can see the Institute Brochure for more details.

Deadline for 2005 Beacon Awards Announced
CTPAA has set the deadlines for the 2005 Beacon Awards honoring excellence in public affairs throughout the cable industry. This year the final deadline for Beacon entries is December 3, 2004, but members can save $50 if they submit their entry before November 19, 2004, the early bird deadline.

The 2005 Beacon Awards Judging Operations Work Group is currently reviewing the Call for Entries and revising it for increased clarity and fairness. CTPAA will mail the Call for Entries to members in September, and it will also be available on-line.

This is the perfect time for members to get a head start on planning their Beacon entries. The Beacon pages of the CTPAA Web site offer several valuable tools to assist members, such as Frequently Asked Questions and information about past Beacon-winning projects. Members can read summaries from Beacon finalists from 2001 to 2004. These summaries are the core of each Beacon entry and detail the planning, implementation and results of a successful cable public affairs initiative. They can serve as a model for preparing a 2005 Beacon Award. In order to read these summaries, members will be prompted to enter their user name (their email) and password (their last name). All must be in lowercase letters.

CTPAA will announce the winners of the 2005 Beacon Awards during a gala ceremony and dinner on Tuesday, May 3, 2005, during FORUM 2005 at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington, DC. The 2005 Beacon co-chairs are Peggy Ballard, Vice President, Strategic Communications, Scientific-Atlanta Inc. and Brian Wirth, Vice President, Government & Public Affairs, Time Warner Cable. For more information on the 2005 Beacon Awards, contact Michelle Butler at 202-775-1082 or via email at mbutler@ctpaa.org.

ESPN & The V Foundation Ask Fans to Show Their Spirit
ESPN and The V Foundation for Cancer Research have launched a new fundraiser to recruit sports fans everywhere to join the fight against cancer. On September 7 they will hold the inaugural "Show Your Spirit Day!" and are inviting individuals, schools, companies and organizations to participate by wearing their favorite sports team apparel. In exchange for this "dress down day" opportunity, ESPN and The V Foundation are asking participants to make a donation to The V Foundation. The minimum requested is $5 per participant and 100 percent of the money raised will fund research grants.

The V Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to saving lives by helping to find a cure for cancer. It was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, a legendary college basketball coach and commentator. Valvano lost his battle with cancer, but he spent his last ten months using his influence to bring attention to the disease and call people to action. The foundation is guided by his legacy and has raised over $40 million and awarded more than 200 research grants for all types of cancer. Over the past five years, at least 83 cents for every dollar raised has directly financed cancer research.

Those interested in showing their spirit on September 7, which also marks ESPN's 25th anniversary, can visit The V Foundation Web site where they can register for the fundraiser. Once registered, organizations will receive a kit to set up their event including a booklet with sample press releases, "V" pins for all participants, and a collection envelope.
