The History Channel Partners with Laura Bush's Preserve America to Encourage Historical Preservation
From the East Room of the White House, The History Channel announced a partnership with First Lady Laura Bush's Preserve America program to encourage historical preservation. As part of the network's Save Our History philanthropic campaign, The History Channel is working with Preserve American on an effort that will mobilize communities and schools across the country to preserve America's national and local heritage, including landmarks, sites and artifacts. To help raise awareness of the effort, Mrs. Bush completed three Public Service Announcements for Save Our History.

Launched in 1998, The History Channel's Save Our History is a strategic, philanthropic initiative designed to further historic preservation and history education. It supplements the teaching of history in America's classrooms, educates the public on the importance of historical preservation and motivates communities across the country to help save endangered local historical treasures.

The History Channel has created a free, comprehensive, educational manual for teachers. The manual contains tailored lesson plans for grades 2-12 and includes guidelines on how to coordinate research projects. Classrooms are also being provided with a "road map" on how to work directly with local organizations. These materials are available online at http://www.magnetmail.net/ls.cfm?r=2707054&sid=110089&m=28936&u=CTPPA&s=http://www.saveourhistory.com or http://www.magnetmail.net/ls.cfm?r=2707054&sid=110090&m=28936&u=CTPPA&s=http://www.HistoryChannel.com. All participating schools and students will receive a certificate of participation.

This new initiative also will empower towns and cities throughout the United States to protect their heritage by joining with local mayors' offices, community leaders, preservation organizations, cable operators, school boards, teachers and students. Materials for local organizations are available online.

All classrooms and organizations that participate in the Save Our History national historical preservation initiative can document and submit their efforts for Save Our History Awards. Winning communities will have the opportunity to send representatives to the Save Our History national awards event in Washington D.C., where they can vie for the $10,000 Save Our History Classroom Award, the $10,000 Save Our History Preservation Award, and the $10,000 Bank of America Community Award. Bank of America is the sponsor of the Save Our History program. Applications and more information on the awards may be downloaded from the Save Our History Web site.

In March 2003, President Bush signed the Preserve America Executive Order, establishing a White House program to encourage conservation and enjoyment of our nation's historical, cultural and natural resources. Preserve America honors preservation activities by recognizing individual and community efforts to protect America's heritage sites.  For more information on The History Channel's Save Our History, contact Lynn Gardner at 212-850-9322.
